Info about PatriotMemoirs:

Official game description:
"Fool. A top spy cannot show emotion. You must outlive all those bastards. You will be my hand of justice against them. You will watch the people pass judgment on them. You will pass the truth to the next generation. As long as someone remembers, we will always be here."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a story about an ordinary person who changed the world… Whenever the Chinese nation faces a crisis, there are always many ordinary yet great people who strive, bleed, and sacrifice to save their homeland. In the dark years of the War of Resistance, many brave souls infiltrated the heart of the enemy, transmitted intelligence, and killed Japanese and traitorous puppet forces. Most of them never lived to see the long night turn to dawn.
This time, you will become one of them. You will struggle through the long darkness and complete your mission in the narrowest of gaps. When you survive the inferno by sheer luck, when the intelligence you send out changes the world, when you rain hellfire upon the Japanese islands – your true mission will have only just begun.
"Let’s pinky promise. When the Japanese invaders are defeated and China rises again, you must come and tell me."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I’m Zhu Shiming, a graduate of the prestigious Army Officer Academy… in calligraphy.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of your classmates went to the battlefield, while you alone went undercover in the den of No. 86.
By day, you are a traitor, a lowly office worker squeezed by your superiors. By night, you are a ghost hidden in the glitzy darkness.
The Japanese invaders’ blades glint with cold steel; the traitors’ greed seeps into the bone; your superior’s betrayal strikes without warning; the underground resistance shines like a faint light in the dark… Every face wears a mask. Even the tenderest embrace can become a hero’s grave.
Your choices determine not only your own fate but also the fates of others.
\- When everyone wears a mask, who will you stand with?
\- When the Japanese order you to execute your own comrade, will you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat?
\- When the werewolf‑kill game begins, will you sacrifice yourself or offer up an ally?
\- And finally, when you become the sword‑bearer, will you hesitate to give Tokyo a “little boy” hug?
Cinematic Atmosphere
--------------------
600 minutes of cinematic, dynamic visuals that bring to life the absurd and dark “Shangchuan” – an isolated island.
Free Exploration
----------------
Break free from linear storytelling. Slack off at work during the day, explore freely at night. Different stories unfold in every place, every day. Your absence will even generate new stories.
Spy Experience
--------------
To be a spy, you have to know a little bit of everything. You’ll pick locks, handle microfilm, hold your breath against a lie detector, play the butterfly knife, pour latte art – and it’s best if you’re also a high‑roller at the casino.
Change the World
----------------
Every daily choice reshapes the future. Even a trivial encounter at the park at night might have a decisive impact years later. Over 30 characters, 256 decision points, 609 branching plots, and as many as 16 completely different final endings.
A Final Word from the Developer
-------------------------------
In the process of creation, we consulted a vast amount of historical material. Many of the story’s dates, places, characters, and events have historical prototypes. Yet even so, we know that we cannot convey complete truth through a game – because the truth is often too cruel.
Researching history is also a process of awakening forgotten souls. More than ninety years have passed. Most of the elderly who lived through that era have since passed away. Our neighbors across the sea have never truly repented. To some of them, this is all last century’s business – even if they never admit to the Nanjing Massacre, it’s time to move on.
But we have no right to move on. If we forget those ordinary people – who, in the darkest of times, suffered unspeakable horrors so that we could live decently today, and who left behind not even a tombstone – then when a new crisis comes tomorrow, there will be no one to serve as the backbone of the Chinese nation.
That is why we decided to tell this story: in the darkest years, an ordinary patriot goes undercover in the heart of the enemy. He experiences fear, temptation, pain, and betrayal. He finds his direction through confusion, and passes on the torch while the long night still endures.
If you, right now, are still willing to embrace the “imperfections” in our content and storytelling… if you are willing to travel across time to feel the fear and courage of those ordinary people who kept moving forward…
Then please, push open this door. Outside the door, time flows on – but a single voice rings out, deafening.
Kill the traitors, destroy the invaders, reclaim our land!
Kill the traitors, destroy the invaders, reclaim our land!!
Kill the traitors, destroy the invaders, reclaim our land!!!

Common complaints:
- Disguised romance game (weight 0.81): Many reviewers criticize that the game is essentially a romance or galgame hidden under a spy drama theme, with excessive romantic content overwhelming the espionage mainline. This mismatch is seen as disrespectful to the serious wartime context.
- Confusing fragmented storyline (weight 0.56): Reviewers consistently found the story chaotic, confusing, and hard to follow due to heavy use of flashbacks and non-linear storytelling. This fragmentation, combined with unclear purpose, alienates first-time players.
- Underdeveloped and illogical protagonist (weight 0.45): The male protagonist is portrayed as stupid, weak, and lacking basic undercover qualities, with absurd actions that break immersion. His background and growth are underdeveloped, making plot turns feel abrupt.
- Poor writing quality overall (weight 0.43): The script is criticized for being incoherent, illogical, and poorly written, with stiff performances and weak dialogue. The developer is called out for lacking a good writer or director, and AI-generated text is even suspected.
- Mediocre and unoriginal story (weight 0.41): The story is described as bad, mediocre, or bland, with a lack of highlights and dull execution that only picks up in later chapters. It is also seen as inferior to other titles by the same developer.
- Multiple playthroughs required, frustrating (weight 0.41): The game forces repetitive playthroughs to unlock all endings and understand the full story, which many find annoying. Some endings require meeting specific conditions that are hard to achieve the first time, and the large story tree is not newcomer-friendly.
- Inconsistent pacing and rushed narrative (weight 0.35): Multiple clusters indicate the story pacing is uneven with drawn-out sections and a rushed timeline, weakening immersion. The micro-level plot feels insufficient due to the long span covered.
- Unconvincing spy logic and details (weight 0.32): The spy work is depicted as childish and unrealistic, with characters acting illogically, such as leaving radios in the open and failing to manage facial expressions. Props and set pieces also look cheap, breaking immersion.
- Technical and interface issues (weight 0.29): The node selection system is confusing, with no hints, and some nodes cannot be accessed later. QTE minigames lack prompts, and the countdown timer is too short, causing frustrating failures.
- Fragmented character portrayals (weight 0.28): Character portrayals are inconsistent, with female characters often indistinguishable and their backgrounds unexplained. Some character reversals lack foreshadowing, and motivations feel forced.
- Excessive romance scenes harm pacing (weight 0.25): A significant amount of the game is filled with romance and emotional interactions that dilute the main plot and slow pacing. The romantic side plots frequently interrupt the main emotional line, making the experience feel padded.
- Wish-fulfillment undermines seriousness (weight 0.24): The plot includes wish-fulfillment elements and melodramatic dialogue that trivialize the anti-Japanese war theme. Reviewers feel this is disrespectful to the era's martyrs and reduces the expected seriousness and tension.
- Lack of consequence and meaningful choices (weight 0.23): Several reviewers note that many choices are fake, with the player having no real impact, and endings often unrelated to decisions. This reduces engagement and the sense of achievement.
- Narrative control and emotional transitions weak (weight 0.23): Reviewers note that narrative control is lacking, with abrupt emotional transitions and uneven ending quality. The pacing issues and poor execution make the story feel disjointed and unsatisfying.
- Controversial side stories and branches (weight 0.21): The if-branch side stories, some hidden, are controversial and of questionable thematic fit. These branches introduce elements that disrupt the narrative coherence and may confuse players.
- Unpolished animations and acting (weight 0.21): Character animations are overdone, and some acting moments are stiff, breaking emotional connection. The cinematography has abrupt cuts and hard transitions that harm immersion.
- Immersion-breaking production values (weight 0.2): Some reviewers criticize the cheap props, low-resolution video filters, and lackluster visuals that detract from the experience. The interface and previews promised a serious war theme, but the final product feels perfunctory.
- Certain storylines lack foreshadowing (weight 0.17): Some plot points, such as character reversals and reveals like Li Lingyu being Japanese, feel jarring and without proper build-up. This contributes to the overall sense of incoherence and fragmented storytelling.
- Unintelligent villains and antagonists (weight 0.13): The villains are dumbed-down and unreasonably unintelligent, reducing the tension and logic of the spy narrative. This undermines the seriousness and believability of the conflicts.
- Specific bugs and progression blockers (weight 0.12): There is a bug that blocks progression, and a bug causing repeated plot content. These technical issues further hamper the already criticized narrative experience.

The game's thematic courage, atmospheric setting, and strong cast, particularly the character Deng Jiaru, are praised. The narrative's use of humor to soften suffering and the deep philosophical meaning of the affinity system are also valued.
- Frustration (weight 0.11): Frustration stems from rushed pacing, nonsensical plot points, and a bug that blocks progression. Players also feel their intelligence is insulted by the game's difficulty and are upset by the lack of espionage and too much flirting.
- Admiration (weight 0.08): Players admire the beautiful and intelligent character Deng Jiaru and the historical setting with attention to detail. The game's theme, cast, and branching story provide an immersive experience. Achieving special moments like killing Asaka Yasuhiko or bombing Japan adds to the satisfaction, as does the high level of completion and improved Korean localization.
- Anger (weight 0.04): Anger arises from poor writing and misleading marketing, with the anti-Japanese war theme being misused for a romance story, which players find disrespectful to the martyrs. The promised firecracker-throwing feature never appeared, and killing off Deng Jiaru upset players. The first three chapters are filled with romance comedy instead of serious content, fueling anger.
- Tension (weight 0.04): The constant sense of danger and the pressure of choices described as walking on thin ice generate tension. The increasingly tense chapters, especially the bank storyline in chapter four, and the near-burst moments in emotional scenes add to the suspense. Scenes between characters who are both pretending and probing each other's true intentions create a gripping atmosphere.
- Amusement (weight 0.04): Players find amusement in the comedic seduction scene and the protagonist's pragmatic, worldly attitude. The poor actress makeup and low-quality filters provide unintentional comedy, and the absurd sequence of the protagonist daydreaming about riches is entertaining. The realistic depiction of a stereotypical colleague also contributes to the amusement.
- Disgust (weight 0.04): Disgust arises from the shallow and foolish portrayal of protagonists, villains, and female leads. Players feel the game trivializes a serious historical period and does not live up to expectations. Poor-quality writing, perceived cynical marketing, and repetitive romance options contribute to disgust.

The premise of being an undercover agent with many branching choices is engaging, and the story is layered and progressive, providing a rich experience.
- Excitement (weight 0.03): Excitement comes from the addictive butterfly effect of choices and the thrilling moments like dropping a nuclear bomb on Japan or the fiery ending of killing a villain. The many QTE segments testing reactions and the spectacular total aerial bombardment scene lead to peaks in the gameplay experience.
- Empathy (weight 0.02): Players feel empathy for the characters due to the story's depiction of harsh realities and the difficulty of surviving and fighting bosses. The realistic portrayal of emotional suppression before a breakdown and the struggles of a spy are effectively communicated, allowing players to connect with the characters.
- Immersion (weight 0.02): The undercover identity mechanic makes players forget they are acting, creating a strong sense of immersion. The atmospheric portrayal of dangerous locations like building 86 and interrogation rooms enhances this. The game's depth is best appreciated when played in a quiet, focused environment.
- Annoyance (weight 0.01): Annoyance is caused by the inability to fast-forward minigames and a feeling of lag, especially during speed-up. These technical issues disrupt the flow of gameplay and detract from the overall experience.
