About the Game
==============
Death Is Not an Escape.
-----------------------
Trapped forever in a realm of eldritch evil where even death is not an escape, four determined Survivors face a bloodthirsty Killer in a vicious game of nerve and wits. Pick a side and step into a world of tension and terror with horror gaming's best asymmetrical multiplayer.
Survivors play in third-person and have the advantage of better situational awareness. The Killer plays in first-person and is more focused on their prey.
The Survivors' goal in each encounter is to escape the Killing Ground without getting caught by the Killer - something that sounds easier than it is, especially when the environment changes every time you play.
Key Features
------------
• **Survive Together… Or Not** - Survivors can either cooperate with the others or be selfish. Your chance of survival will vary depending on whether you work together as a team or if you go at it alone. Will you be able to outwit the Killer and escape their Killing Ground?
• **Where Am I?** - Each level is procedurally generated, so you’ll never know what to expect. Random spawn points mean you will never feel safe as the world and its danger change every time you play.
• **A Feast for Killers** - Dead by Daylight draws from all corners of the horror world. As a Killer you can play as anything from a powerful Slasher to terrifying paranormal entities. Familiarize yourself with your Killing Grounds and master each Killer’s unique power to be able to hunt, catch and sacrifice your victims.
• **Deeper and Deeper** - Each Killer and Survivor has their own deep progression system and plenty of unlockables that can be customized to fit your own personal strategy. Experience, skills and understanding of the environment are key to being able to hunt or outwit the Killer.
• **Real People, Real Fear** - The procedural levels and real human reactions to pure horror makes each game session an unexpected scenario. You will never be able to tell how it’s going to turn out. Ambience, music, and chilling environments combine into a terrifying experience. With enough time, you might even discover what’s hiding in the fog.

Below are summaries of things people say about the game per category.
Each point is assigned a weight that represents how often it is mentioned across all reviews.
What players like:
- Fun, Addictive Core Gameplay (weight 0.65): The core gameplay loop is enjoyable and addicting, with players finding the game fun and rewarding despite its flaws. Many reviewers highlight the unique premise, engaging mechanics, and the potential for memorable moments. The game's longevity and active community further contribute to its appeal.
- Diverse Characters, Unique Abilities (weight 0.32): The game features a diverse roster of killers and survivors, each with unique abilities, perks, and backstories. This variety adds depth to the gameplay, allowing for extensive experimentation and diverse matches. Regular updates introduce new content, keeping the game fresh and engaging.
- Active Development, Constant Updates (weight 0.16): The developers actively maintain the game through frequent updates, balance changes, and new content. They are responsive to community feedback and strive to improve the game's quality and balance. This dedication contributes to the game's longevity and continued engagement.
- Complex, Strategic Gameplay (weight 0.14): The game's complexity arises from its mechanics, strategies, and the need for precise timing. The game has a high skill ceiling, rewarding skilled play and offering a strategic challenge. The game creates intense tension, where players are either desperately trying to survive or running for their lives.
- Iconic Horror Franchise Crossovers (weight 0.12): The game features a wide array of licensed horror characters from iconic franchises like Halloween, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill. This crossover element adds fan appeal and diversity to the game, allowing players to live out their horror movie fantasies as either the final girl or the killer. The game is a 'Disneyland for horror fans'.
- Rewarding Progression, Customization (weight 0.11): The game features a deep progression system that motivates both killers and survivors to keep playing. Players can unlock new skills, level up, and customize their characters. The perk system is well-designed, with developers nerfing commonly used perks and buffing uncommonly used ones to balance gameplay.
- Adrenaline Rush, Thrilling Moments (weight 0.1): The game provides an adrenaline rush, especially when being chased or trying to finish a generator under pressure. The thrill of surviving or the satisfaction of hunting creates an intense and engaging experience. The game provides memorable moments, such as outsmarting a team of high-prestige survivors.
- Fair Monetization, Earnable Cosmetics (weight 0.06): In-game currency can be earned to buy certain (non-licensed) cosmetics and characters. The game's progression and monetization system includes new characters and skins. There is no need to pay for advantages, as licensed characters' perks can be purchased with iridescent shards earned in-game.
- Active, Cooperative Community (weight 0.05): The game is highly cooperative, making it suitable for playing with friends and forming connections within the community. The player community is active and creative, with tournaments, live streams, and fan-produced content. The game embraces diversity naturally.
- Varied, Atmospheric Map Design (weight 0.04): Each map has a unique character, such as the Crotus Prenn Asylum and the Red Forest. Map designs are varied, ranging from dark forests to abandoned buildings, all creating a sense of unease. The game's maps are meticulously designed to evoke dread, such as abandoned asylums or decrepit farms.

Common complaints:
- Unfair matchmaking ruins gameplay (weight 0.62): Matchmaking imbalances create frustrating experiences for both killers and survivors. Killers often face coordinated survivor teams, while solo queue survivors struggle with uncooperative teammates. This leads to unfair matches and the use of "toxic" strategies like tunneling and camping, which further diminish enjoyment. The game's balance is affected by the fact that party matches and solo queue matches are not separated, creating an inherent disadvantage for solo killers.
- Community toxicity plagues matches (weight 0.61): The game suffers from a toxic community, with players frequently engaging in unsportsmanlike behavior, harassment, and verbal abuse. This toxicity is present on both sides, with survivors and killers often blaming each other and engaging in negative interactions. The reporting system is also seen as ineffective, allowing toxic behavior to persist.
- Excessive grind, pay-to-win elements (weight 0.33): The game's progression system is grindy and/or pay-to-win, requiring extensive playtime or real money to unlock characters, perks, and customizations. This creates a disadvantage for new or free-to-play players, as essential perks are locked behind paywalls or require significant time investment. The monetization model is egregious, rivaling free-to-play games despite the base game's price.
- Limited perk variety/imbalance (weight 0.28): The game suffers from a limited meta, with only a small selection of perks being viable. This lack of variety leads to repetitive gameplay and forces players to use suboptimal builds. Many perks are also locked behind paid characters, creating a pay-to-win dynamic.
- Steep learning curve, poor tutorial (weight 0.21): The game has a steep learning curve, overwhelming new players with the numerous killers, perks, and mechanics. The tutorial is inadequate, failing to explain essential game mechanics. This makes it difficult for new players to succeed and can lead to frustration.
- Unrealistic expectations on killers (weight 0.19): Killers are often expected to follow a "Survivor Rulebook" where they prioritize survivor fun over their own. The survivor community often complains about killers 'tunnelling' (focusing on one survivor) and 'slugging' (leaving downed survivors on the ground). There is a power imbalance between killer and survivor roles.
- Incompetent developers, poor security (weight 0.15): The developers and publisher are incompetent regarding account security, with hackers able to get users banned without proper investigation. The developers have removed skillful mechanics, making the game less fun for skillful play. The game is excessively buggy, with players getting caught in gaps or teleporting into the floor.
- Survivor gameplay is often stale (weight 0.13): Survivor gameplay can become stale due to the necessity of using specific perks for an advantage. The reviewer typically doesn't expect to win as survivor, feeling that survivors are meant to be under-powered. Survivors are frequently slugged and bled out, preventing them from meaningfully playing the match.
- Killer design has declined (weight 0.12): The Killer design has gone downhill; too many high-mobility/anti-loop (or both) Killers infest the game now. Some killers or perks can ruin the game for extended periods, like Skull Merchant's ability to sustain 3-Gen strategies. Certain killer designs, like Clown and Artist, can make the game boring for survivors by slowing down chases.
- Survivors are often punished (weight 0.1): Survivors are hit on hook repeatedly for looping, stunning, or saving teammates. Survivors who do objectives and help teammates are instantly mori'd as the last survivor, even when close to the hatch. Defensive hits after unhooking lead to "clowning" situations where survivors tank hits with endurance.
- Teammates are often unhelpful (weight 0.1): Teammates often troll, sabotage, or are generally unhelpful, such as by intentionally ruining generators, hiding instead of rescuing, or leading the killer to other players. Teammates deplete all the pallets and leave other players without resources to escape.
- Developers prioritize profit over quality (weight 0.1): The developers work on their game under flowed decision making of the higher-ups, so the game's health has never been a priority. The developers lean towards the side that brings more money with the help of the cosmetics. The developers focus on new content instead of fixing existing map issues.
- Killer gameplay is often stressful (weight 0.09): Killer gameplay becomes stressful when prioritizing fun over winning, as generators get finished quickly. For each step forward the devs make in their game, they take about 3 or 4 steps backward; they fixed the 3-gen issue in the game by limiting the amount of times a generator can be damaged before progress is made permanent, however they also shrunk the size of most maps and made the loops in them worse.
- Skill expression is diminishing (weight 0.09): Skill expression is diminishing with updates as developers try to dumb down the game while trying to appease both casual and top-tier players. The game has removed a significant amount of skill expression due to killer perks that reveal survivor locations and prevent them from playing the game.

Gameplay feedback:
- Asymmetrical 4v1 cat-and-mouse gameplay (weight 0.61): The core gameplay loop involves asymmetrical 4v1 matches where survivors repair generators to escape, while the killer hunts and sacrifices them. Killers have unique abilities and perks, requiring survivors to adapt and strategize. The game's outcome depends on player skill, teamwork, and adapting to the killer's playstyle.
- Perks enable character customization (weight 0.14): Perks allow for character customization and diverse strategies for both killers and survivors. Killers have unique powers and add-ons, while survivors can equip perks to enhance their abilities. The perk meta is constantly evolving due to frequent rebalancing and the addition of new content.
- Repairing generators to enable escape (weight 0.1): The primary objective for survivors is to repair generators to power the exit gates and escape. This core gameplay loop has remained largely unchanged, with survivors focusing on generator repairs while avoiding the killer. The repetitive nature of this task is a common point of criticism.
- Teamwork crucial for survivor success (weight 0.06): Survivor gameplay varies from chase-oriented to altruistic builds, but solo queueing can be challenging due to lack of coordination. Survivors often rely on meta builds, limiting diversity. Teamwork is essential for success, but can be difficult to achieve with random players.
- Strategic chases and map knowledge (weight 0.05): Chases are a core element of the game, involving strategic looping around pallets and windows. Mastering these chase mechanics and map layouts is crucial for both survivors and killers. The game has evolved into a chase-oriented experience, with players calculating routes and pallet usage.
- Killers possess unique, powerful abilities (weight 0.04): Killers possess unique abilities and powers that make them formidable threats. These abilities range from teleportation to invisibility, requiring survivors to adapt their strategies. New killers are frequently added, often with anti-loop mechanics, further reducing survivor options during chases.
- Killers disrupt generator repair progress (weight 0.03): Killers can slow down survivor progress by breaking generators and pallets. Survivors must balance generator repairs with avoiding the killer, creating a tense and dynamic match. Completing generators is faster with more survivors working together, emphasizing teamwork.
- Randomized maps create varied matches (weight 0.03): Matches are randomized due to procedurally generated maps, unpredictable player behavior, and random item spawns. This randomness ensures that each match feels unique, but can also lead to imbalances and frustrating situations. The game's matchmaking system attempts to balance teams, but success depends on coordinated teamwork.
- Asymmetrical horror, inadequate tutorial (weight 0.03): Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical horror game where four survivors try to escape while one killer tries to hook them. The tutorial is inadequate for new players. The game is a 4v1 PvP game.
- Map offerings impact game balance (weight 0.02): Map offerings can significantly impact the game's balance, giving an extreme advantage to one side. Map knowledge is crucial due to the unique layouts and twists of each map. Some maps favor certain sides, creating an unbalanced experience.
- Limited game modes, uninteresting events (weight 0.02): The game features a single core game mode, with temporary modes appearing periodically. Event modes have been added to the game recently, but they are not considered good. Recent updates focus on catering to hardcore players with buffs and nerfs, diminishing the fun aspect.
- Personal gameplay experiences and observations (weight 0.02): This cluster contains mostly personal anecdotes and observations from a reviewer's gameplay experience. While these observations provide some insight into the game's mechanics and player interactions, they lack the specificity and constructiveness needed for a high importance score.

Performance notes:
- Frequent technical and server issues (weight 0.22): The game suffers from a multitude of technical issues, including frequent server crashes, disconnects, lag spikes, and poor optimization. These problems can lead to lost progress, frustrating gameplay, and an overall negative experience, even on capable hardware. The issues appear to be persistent and recurring, with new updates often introducing new bugs.
- Runs smoothly for some players (weight 0.03): Some reviewers report that the game is well-optimized and runs smoothly, even on average gaming rigs. They also did not encounter any bugs or errors during their playtime. However, these points are less frequent than the negative ones.
- Inconsistent and unadjustable sound (weight 0.01): The game has inconsistent sound levels, with some sounds being deafening while others are too quiet. Also, the game lacks adjustable sound options.
- Pallet dropping issues (weight 0.01): Pallets sometimes fail to drop when the space bar is pressed, even when spamming the button. There are problems with connection or errors when dropping pallets on the killer.
- Optimization problems (weight 0.01): Optimization problems. The game's optimization remains a weak point: on weak systems, there are FPS drops, long loading times, and lags.
- Workable game size (weight 0.01): The game size is workable.
- Anti-cheat system errors (weight 0.01): The anti-cheat system causes errors and kicks the player out of matches. Verifying game files does not resolve the anti-cheat error.
- Game remains running in background (weight 0.01): The game can only be fully closed via the task manager. The game may continue running in the background even after being closed, consuming resources.
- Cross-play and controller support (weight 0.01): Cross-progression and cross-play are available, allowing players to switch between console and PC. The game is fully playable with a controller on PC Windows.

Recommendations:
- Fun, unique, and thrilling experience (weight 0.93): Despite its flaws, many reviewers still recommend the game, particularly for fans of the horror genre or asymmetrical multiplayer experiences. They highlight the unique blend of horror, strategy, and teamwork, as well as the intense and thrilling moments the game can provide. Playing with friends is frequently mentioned as a way to enhance the enjoyment and mitigate some of the game's negative aspects.
- Play with friends is better (weight 0.78): A common suggestion is to play with friends to mitigate the negative aspects of the game, such as toxic players and uncooperative teammates. Playing with a coordinated group can enhance the fun and increase the chances of success, especially when playing as a survivor. Many reviewers explicitly advise against playing solo due to the prevalence of these issues.
- Strongly discourage playing the game (weight 0.76): Many reviewers actively discourage purchasing or playing the game, citing significant flaws, a toxic community, frustrating gameplay, and a generally miserable experience. Some even suggest avoiding any association with the game altogether, emphasizing that it's not worth the time, money, or mental health investment. These points show signs of review bombing.
- Buy on sale, try base (weight 0.75): Many reviewers recommend purchasing the game only when it's on sale, as the full price may not be worth the investment due to microtransactions and paywalled content. They also suggest trying the base game first before investing in DLCs to see if you enjoy the game. Some reviewers specifically advise against spending money on cosmetics or battle passes.
- New players: be patient (weight 0.72): Reviewers often advise new players to be patient, learn the game mechanics, and not take the game too seriously. They suggest focusing on having fun and experimenting with different playstyles rather than solely focusing on winning. Watching videos and streams from experienced players is also recommended to improve understanding of the game.
- Balance and hit registration issues (weight 0.69): Reviewers note that the game has balance issues, with some feeling that one side is often favored over the other. Hit registration issues and the handling of certain aspects by the developers are also mentioned as ongoing concerns. Despite these issues, some reviewers find that the charm of the game balances out the frustrations.
- Play both Killer and Survivor (weight 0.12): Reviewers suggest playing both Killer and Survivor to gain a better understanding of the game mechanics and balance. Some reviewers express a preference for playing as Killer, finding it more enjoyable or rewarding than playing as Survivor, especially in solo queue. Others suggest that the Survivor experience is only enjoyable with a coordinated team.
- Significant time investment needed (weight 0.07): The game requires a significant time investment to learn and master its mechanics. Reviewers note that it can take a long time to unlock abilities and characters, and that new players may face a steep learning curve. However, they also suggest that the game can be rewarding for those who are willing to invest the time and effort.
- Implement ranked mode, fix issues (weight 0.03): Reviewers suggest implementing a ranked mode with skill-based matchmaking to improve the competitive experience. They also suggest prioritizing fixes to existing issues over adding new content. Some reviewers specifically mention the need for a more robust skill-based matchmaking system to ensure fair and enjoyable matches.

Other player notes:
- Significant time investment required (weight 0.08): Many reviewers have invested significant time in the game, often hundreds or thousands of hours. Some reviewers primarily play one role (killer or survivor), while others play both, with solo queue as survivor being particularly frustrating.
- Asymmetrical horror with licenses (weight 0.07): The game uniquely blends asymmetrical multiplayer with horror elements, featuring both original and licensed characters from various horror franchises. This combination is a key part of the game's appeal and identity. However, some reviewers feel the focus on licenses overshadows original content.
- Easy to learn, hard master (weight 0.03): The game is considered easy to learn but difficult to master, requiring time and effort to become proficient. The game is also frequently available on sale, making it more accessible.
- Decent graphics, low requirements (weight 0.02): The game's graphics are generally considered adequate, with low PC requirements. The art, music, and small details are amazing and enhance the experience.
- Target audience: teens/adults (weight 0.02): The game is generally considered suitable for teenagers and adults due to its horror themes and violent content.
- Vague, subjective comments (weight 0.02): These points are too vague or subjective to be useful. They include statements about the game's size, the reviewer's personal opinions, and the lack of competition.
