The gunplay, strategic combat, and diverse character builds contribute to a deep and enjoyable experience.
- Co-op Elevates Experience (weight 0.91): While enjoyable solo, the game truly shines and becomes significantly more fun when played in cooperative multiplayer with friends. The teamwork, shared challenges, and social interaction greatly amplify the overall gameplay experience.
- Captivating NYC Winter Atmosphere (weight 0.88): The game's standout feature is its richly detailed and immersive post-apocalyptic New York City setting, particularly during winter. The snowy streets, environmental storytelling, and chilling atmosphere are consistently praised for creating a unique and believable world that significantly enhances the player experience.
- Visually Stunning & Aged Well (weight 0.74): Players consistently praise the game's graphics, noting its impressive visual fidelity even years after its 2016 release. It's often compared favorably to modern titles and runs smoothly on PC with good optimization and high frame rates.
- Preferred Over The Division 2 (weight 0.71): Many players express a strong preference for this game over its successor, The Division 2, particularly regarding its atmosphere, initial difficulty, and overall immersive experience, often considering it the 'definitive Division experience'.
- Engaging Narrative & World-Building (weight 0.7): The game offers a captivating story and rich lore that keeps players hooked, often supported by good voice acting and well-staged missions. The narrative, especially its connection to a post-pandemic world, provides a strong backdrop for the gameplay.
- High Value & Replayability (weight 0.62): Players frequently mention the game's excellent value, especially when purchased on sale, citing the vast amount of content, engaging endgame activities, and worthwhile DLCs that ensure many hours of fun and high replayability.
- Dark Zone Offers Intense PvPvE (weight 0.11): The Dark Zone is a critical highlight, providing a unique and thrilling blend of PvP and PvE encounters. Its unpredictable nature, high-stakes loot, and sense of danger contribute to an adrenaline-fueled experience, often preferred over the sequel's iteration.
- Represents Peak Ubisoft Quality (weight 0.08): The game is often cited as a prime example of Ubisoft's quality from a 'golden era,' with players noting the apparent passion and effort put into its development. It stands out favorably compared to newer Ubisoft titles and is seen as one of their most polished works.
- Outstanding Survival DLC (weight 0.07): The Survival DLC is consistently praised as a brutal, brilliant, and unique roguelike/extraction shooter mode. Its challenging resource management, tense atmosphere, and distinct gameplay make it a standout addition, with many suggesting it could be its own game.
- Robust Character Customization (weight 0.06): The game offers extensive character customization through a wide array of abilities, talents, perks, equipment sets, and weapon modifications. This depth allows players to experiment with diverse builds and playstyles, enhancing replayability and strategic depth.
- Realistic Pandemic Resonance (weight 0.05): The game's depiction of a societal collapse due to a virus resonated strongly with players, especially after real-world events like COVID-19. This narrative depth adds a layer of realism and immersion, making the survival theme feel incredibly current and thought-provoking.

Common complaints:
- Repetitive Gameplay and Grind (weight 0.41): Players consistently report that the core gameplay loop, missions, and end-game content become highly repetitive and monotonous, often feeling like 'padding' or a 'grind-fest'. This 'Ubisoft formula' is seen as pervasive across early game, campaign progression, and end-game activities, leading to player boredom and a perceived waste of time.
- Poor Solo Experience & Matchmaking (weight 0.24): The game is widely considered frustrating and difficult for solo players, especially in later stages and high-difficulty content. Matchmaking is often described as difficult or non-existent due to a low player count, forcing many into a lonely and punishing solo experience that feels designed for groups, contributing to frustration.
- Bullet Sponge Enemies & Unrealistic Combat (weight 0.21): A major complaint is that enemies, including standard NPCs and bosses, are 'bullet sponges' requiring an excessive number of shots, even headshots, to defeat. This design choice, coupled with high damage output from enemies and inconsistent hit feedback, breaks immersion, makes gunplay feel unimpactful, and leads to frustrating, tedious combat encounters.
- Dark Zone Cheaters & Imbalance (weight 0.1): The Dark Zone PvP area is heavily criticized for being plagued by numerous cheaters using hacks, making fair play nearly impossible. It also suffers from severe gear imbalance, allowing top-tier players to dominate beginners, creating a toxic and frustrating experience for many players.
- Always-Online & Ubisoft Launcher Issues (weight 0.07): The mandatory always-online requirement, even for solo play, is a significant frustration, leading to disconnections and preventing offline play. Additionally, the Ubisoft Connect launcher is often reported as janky, buggy, causing login issues, and preventing the game from launching or functioning correctly.
- Frequent Crashes & Technical Issues (weight 0.06): Many players experience frequent game crashes, disconnections, and launch failures, often multiple times within an hour of playtime. These technical problems significantly disrupt gameplay, lead to lost progress, and in some cases, render the game unplayable, severely impacting the overall experience.
- Difficult Early Game & Learning Curve (weight 0.04): The initial hours of the game are often described as rough, difficult, and slow, with a steep learning curve for new players. Players report feeling overwhelmed by game dynamics and experiencing frustrating initial missions and low weapon damage, often requiring early grinding to progress.
- Costly & Problematic DLCs (weight 0.03): DLCs are criticized for being too expensive, often failing to address core narrative gaps, and sometimes being unplayable or difficult to access after purchase. Many players also feel significant content is locked behind these paywalls, requiring additional investment beyond the base game.

Gameplay feedback:
- Deep Progression & Grind (weight 0.14): Players engage in a significant grind to level up, acquire loot, and upgrade gear. Character progression involves skill trees, core stats (Firearms, Stamina, Electronics), crafting, and customizing abilities, which are crucial for effectiveness, especially in endgame content. The grind is central to the experience for many.
- Chaotic Post-Virus New York (weight 0.1): The game is set in a chaotic, post-pandemic winter New York City, ravaged by a deadly virus (Dollar Flu). Players embody Division agents tasked with restoring order, investigating the outbreak, and fighting various factions in the ruined urban environment.
- Robust Endgame & DLC (weight 0.09): After reaching the level cap (typically level 30), a wealth of endgame content unlocks, including challenging missions, daily/weekly objectives, and distinct DLC modes. The Survival DLC offers a unique high-stakes extraction experience, and the Underground DLC provides randomized dungeon crawls for gear farming.
- Level 30 Marks Endgame Start (weight 0.08): Players frequently note that reaching level 30 is not the end, but rather the true beginning of the game, unlocking its full depth of challenges and progression systems. The journey to max level serves as an extended tutorial, after which the gear score system and various endgame activities become the main focus.
- Distinct from Division 2 (weight 0.03): Many players compare the game to its sequel, Division 2, noting that Division 1 is often perceived as more complex and difficult in terms of builds, talents, and combat, with more 'bullet sponge' enemies. It also lacks some features present in Division 2, such as jumping mechanics.
- Familiar Ubisoft Formula (weight 0.03): The game largely follows the classic Ubisoft open-world design, featuring a freely explorable map with distinct districts, side missions, random events, and numerous collectibles. This familiar structure provides clear objectives for exploration and progression, though some find it a 'fast-food style'.
- Upgradable Base of Operations (weight 0.03): The Base of Operations serves as a crucial central hub. Players upgrade its Medical, Security, and Technical wings by completing missions, which in turn unlocks permanent perks, skills, talents, and cosmetic improvements, vital for character progression.

Performance notes:
- Varied PC Performance (weight 0.06): Many players report smooth gameplay, high FPS, and good optimization on mid-to-high end PCs and even Steam Deck, especially after patches. However, some lower-end systems struggle with stable FPS and optimal graphics, indicating a demanding engine for higher settings. Performance often improved with better hardware.
- Minor Bugs, Occasional Crashes (weight 0.03): While many players report encountering few to no significant bugs, some acknowledge minor, infrequent issues. There are reports of occasional game crashes during gameplay and specific long-standing content bugs or rare screen glitches that require a restart.
- Graphics Settings Not Saving (weight 0.01): A specific bug prevents graphics and video settings from saving correctly, requiring players to manually edit configuration files and set them to read-only as a workaround.
- Limited Steam Deck Battery (weight 0): On the Steam Deck LED model, players can expect only 2-3 hours of gameplay before needing to recharge, which is a common limitation for demanding titles on handhelds.
- Seamless Input Device Support (weight 0): The game offers good compatibility for both mouse and controller inputs, allowing players to switch between them effectively and ensuring a smooth control experience.
- Significant Game File Size (weight 0): The game has a large installation size, which can be a consideration for players with limited storage capacity.
- Adequate Russian Translation (weight 0): The Russian translation of the game functions adequately, even for players in the Ukrainian region, providing a comprehensible localization experience.
- Dual Monitor Support (weight 0): The game supports a dual-monitor mode, allowing users to separate the game interface and actual gameplay across two screens for enhanced usability.
- Remote Sabotage Allegations (weight 0): One review suggests the possibility of remote sabotage where NPCs can be rigged to make the game struggle. This point seems speculative and potentially part of a review-bombing sentiment, thus has very low importance.

Recommendations:
- Play with friends, avoid solo. (weight 0.34): A significant amount of feedback highlights that the game's experience is vastly improved when played with friends in co-op. Many strongly advise against playing solo, finding it less satisfying or even "pure crap" for single-player.
- Highly recommended, best on sale. (weight 0.3): The game is widely recommended by players as a solid and enjoyable experience, especially when purchased at a discounted price. Many emphasize its enduring appeal and value years after its initial release.
- Ideal for genre enthusiasts. (weight 0.29): The game is highly recommended for fans of tactical shooters, looter-shooters, and RPGs, offering strategic combat, character progression, and a captivating open-world experience. Players who enjoy farming loot and atmospheric urban warfare will find it particularly engaging.
- Caution for some players/issues. (weight 0.11): The game is not recommended for players seeking fast-paced FPS action, deep immersion, or a straightforward grind, especially solo. Some players also reported issues like constant crashing, cheaters, and an underwhelming story, which could hinder enjoyment.
- Consider specific DLC/Edition purchases. (weight 0.05): Recommendations for DLCs vary, with many suggesting buying all on sale or starting with the base game. Survival and Underground DLCs are frequently highlighted, and the Gold Edition is often recommended for comprehensive content and endgame.
- Mixed Ubisoft brand perception. (weight 0.02): There's varied sentiment regarding Ubisoft as a publisher, with some seeing The Division as one of their best titles. Others express wariness about publisher practices or suggest a focus on updating D1 instead of new franchise entries.

Other player notes:
- Deep Player Engagement & Nostalgia (weight 0.11): Many players have a long-standing history with the game, often playing since beta or release, across multiple platforms, and revisiting it years later. There's a strong sense of nostalgia and attachment, with some considering it a yearly tradition.
- Frequently Purchased on Sale (weight 0.06): A significant number of players acquired the game, often multiple times across different platforms, specifically during sales. This suggests that discounted pricing is a major factor in new or returning player engagement.
- Active but Dwindling Player Base (weight 0.03): Despite its age, the game retains a small but loyal community, and servers are still active. However, concerns about a dwindling player count and potential server shutdowns in the future are present among players.
- Recent Achievement System Overhaul (weight 0.03): Achievements were notably absent for a long time but were finally added by Ubisoft in 2025, almost a decade after launch. Many achievements are rare, suggesting high difficulty or specific requirements, with some requiring co-op or PvP.
- Generally Positive Overall Ratings (weight 0.02): Reviewers often assign the game a respectable numerical score, typically ranging from 7/10 to 9.5/10. While some aspects like the story are considered average, the overall sentiment is positive.
- Confused Genre Identity (weight 0.01): Players have differing perceptions of the game's genre, viewing it as an MMO-shooter, MMORPG, open-world game, or an online RPG-TPS hybrid. Some expected a tactical shooter but found it to be more RPG-focused.

- Satisfaction (weight 0.26): Players express high satisfaction due to the game's overall quality, including its engaging looter-shooter mechanics, realistic graphics, and immersive atmosphere, particularly the snowy New York setting. Cooperative play, robust endgame content, deep customization, and continued relevance years after release are frequently cited as key drivers of enjoyment and perceived value. The game's evolution through updates and its strong community further contribute to a positive and long-lasting experience.
- Frustration (weight 0.14): Players are frustrated by persistent technical issues such as frequent crashes, disconnections, server problems, and a mandatory online requirement. A significant source of frustration is the 'bullet-sponge' enemy design, particularly in solo play, leading to unfair difficulty and a grind-heavy progression system. Additionally, poor matchmaking, the prevalence of cheaters in the Dark Zone, and repetitive mission design contribute to a negative experience.
- Disappointment (weight 0.11): Players express disappointment with the game's repetitive missions, weak or underdeveloped story, and shallow endgame content. The low player count significantly impacts the online and cooperative experience, making it difficult to matchmake and leading to a 'dead game' feeling. Technical issues, server problems, and the prevalence of cheaters further detract from the overall enjoyment, leading to a perception of unfulfilled potential and unplayable content.
- Enjoyment (weight 0.07): Players find enjoyment in the game's immersive atmosphere, particularly the snowy post-pandemic New York setting, and its engaging core looter-shooter gameplay. The cooperative experience with friends, deep customization, and varied content—including story missions, exploration, and the Survival DLC—are major contributors. Despite some repetition or flaws, the satisfying gunplay, rewarding grind, and overall fun factor keep players engaged over hundreds of hours.
- Excitement (weight 0.06): Players are excited by the game's immersive tactical shooting, intense post-apocalyptic setting, and challenging gameplay, especially the unique tension of the Dark Zone and the gripping Survival mode. Its engaging tactical gunplay, deep RPG systems, and the overall quality of its design contribute to its status as one of the best in its genre.
- Joy (weight 0.04): Players experience joy primarily from the game's fun and engaging gameplay, especially when playing cooperatively with friends. The immersive atmosphere, rewarding loot and progression systems, and the sheer entertainment value of missions and exploration contribute significantly. The addition of Steam achievements, finding value in discounted content, and the game's enduring appeal over time also enhance players' overall joyful experience.

The game's enduring quality, its strategic gameplay elements, and the perceived effort from developers in keeping it alive contribute to a strong sense of gratitude and admiration for its overall design and execution.
- Anger (weight 0.02): Players express anger primarily due to the game's severe technical problems, including unplayable server issues, frequent crashes, disconnections, and game-breaking bugs, often exacerbated by Ubisoft Connect. The perceived unfairness of combat, such as 'bullet-sponge' enemies, NPC aimbots, and balance issues, along with the prevalence of cheaters, particularly in the Dark Zone, significantly infuriate players. Frustration with Ubisoft's design choices, perceived incompetence, and lack of support for the game further fuels this anger.
- Boredom (weight 0.01): Boredom primarily stems from the game's repetitive gameplay loops, monotonous missions, and unengaging story, especially when playing solo. The addictive gameplay loop, characterized by the desire to find and perfect gear, explore a living world, and participate in tense Dark Zone encounters, drives sustained interest. - Annoyance (weight 0.01): Players frequently express annoyance with repetitive missions, 'bullet-sponge' enemies, and cumbersome menu navigation. Persistent technical issues, such as game crashes, small bugs, and problems with the Ubisoft launcher, further detract from the experience. The grindy nature of item farming and occasional clunky controls also contribute to a general feeling of irritation.
- Immersion (weight 0.01): Immersion is driven by the game's stunning visuals, detailed world-building, and realistic recreation of a chaotic, post-apocalyptic New York, especially its unique winter atmosphere. The game's prescient pandemic theme and the feeling of being an elite agent in a dystopian setting further draw players into its gritty world, particularly in challenging modes like Survival.
- Relief (weight 0.01): Players experience relief when significant technical issues, such as game crashes, launch problems, or controller compatibility, are resolved, allowing them to play smoothly. Finding the game on sale or discovering that NPCs are no longer 'bullet sponges' also contributes to a sense of relief, enhancing the overall playability and enjoyment.
- Anticipation (weight 0.01): Anticipation is generated by the desire to delve deeper into the game's world, explore endgame content, and experience its sequels or new DLCs. Players eagerly look forward to future developments, potential game improvements, and the opportunity to revisit or discover the game after a long wait, often driven by initial high expectations.
- Mild disappointment (weight 0.01): Mild disappointment stems from the game's perceived flaws, such as repetitive tasks, a simple or weak storyline, and an unimpressive variety of activities, especially when compared to its sequel. The small player base and difficulty finding co-op partners contribute to a less engaging online experience, and 'bullet-sponge' enemies can make the grind feel unrewarding.}
