- Boosts productivity during breaks (weight 0.04): The game is often used as a tool to boost productivity by providing short, engaging breaks from work or study. It helps players refocus, avoid distractions, and maintain motivation throughout the day. The game's ability to provide a small dopamine boost makes it particularly effective for those working from home.
- Significant automation for passive play (weight 0.04): The game offers significant automation features, allowing players to set up their farms and then step away, returning later to collect resources and make further upgrades. Common complaints:
- Repetitive gameplay, lacks depth (weight 0.33): Many reviewers found the game becomes repetitive quickly due to limited content, lack of depth, and a core gameplay loop that doesn't evolve significantly. New farms offer little unique content, and the endgame often involves monotonous tasks like unlocking all crops or achievements. This leads to a lack of long-term engagement and replayability.
- Not truly an 'idle' game (weight 0.24): Despite being marketed as an idle game, many reviewers found that Rusty's Retirement requires significant active attention, especially in the early game. Tasks like planting and harvesting need manual input until automation is unlocked, which can be time-consuming and detract from the 'idle' experience. This mismatch between expectation and reality is a common point of criticism.
- Lacks tutorial, unclear mechanics (weight 0.19): Several reviewers noted a lack of clear guidance and tutorials within the game. Key mechanics and features are not adequately explained, forcing players to experiment or consult external guides. This can lead to initial confusion and a steeper learning curve.
- Progress resets on new farms (weight 0.14): Reviewers expressed frustration that progress and currencies do not carry over between farms. Each new farm requires starting from scratch, which diminishes the incentive to explore new maps and makes the overall experience feel less rewarding.
- Poor optimization, high resource usage (weight 0.14): Several reviewers reported performance issues, including high CPU and GPU usage, even when the game is running in the background. This can lead to overheating, increased fan noise, and reduced performance in other applications.
- Inefficient robot AI, limited range (weight 0.14): Reviewers noted that the robots' AI and working range are not optimized, leading to inefficient crop management. The robots' limited range restricts farm layout options, and their behavior can be unpredictable, hindering full automation.
- Highly addictive, very distracting (weight 0.13): Multiple reviewers found the game highly addictive and distracting, negatively impacting their productivity and focus on other tasks. The constant urge to check on the farm can be disruptive, making it difficult to truly play the game idly in the background as intended.
- Technical issues, black screen bug (weight 0.13): Some reviewers reported technical issues, such as black screen bugs and lack of Linux support, which prevent them from playing the game. The game also has resolution issues on Steam Deck.
- No refund on building removal (weight 0.12): Reviewers noted that the game does not refund currency when buildings are removed, and there is no grid display when placing buildings. This can lead to wasted resources and difficulty in planning the farm layout.
- Repetitive soundtrack (weight 0.12): Some reviewers found the soundtrack repetitive during extended play sessions. The limited number of tracks can become monotonous over time.
- Achievements are grindy, time-consuming (weight 0.06): Many reviewers found the achievement system grindy, especially those related to animal acquisition. The slow rate of fossil collection, required to unlock animals, creates an artificial delay and extends the playtime significantly, making it feel like a chore.
- Limited building placement options (weight 0.02): The inability to rotate buildings and the cumbersome item moving system were points of frustration for reviewers. Misplacing items can be costly and time-consuming to correct, and the lack of rotation options limits creative farm layouts.
- Save issues, lost progress (weight 0.01): Some reviewers reported issues with the game not saving progress correctly, leading to lost playtime. This can be frustrating and discouraging for players.
- Not for action-oriented players (weight 0.01): Some reviewers felt that the game was not suitable for players seeking constant action or challenge. The game is more focused on relaxing and idling, which may not appeal to all players.

Gameplay feedback:
- Farm management and automation (weight 0.2): The core gameplay loop revolves around managing and automating a farm, planting crops, harvesting resources, and expanding the operation. The game blends idle and active elements, allowing players to progress while multitasking or actively managing their farm.
- Transition from active to idle (weight 0.14): The game features a balance between active and idle gameplay, with automation becoming more prominent as players progress. Unlocking the 'Sprunk' character or similar automation features is a key milestone, transitioning the game into a more relaxed, hands-off experience.
- Small screen footprint (weight 0.05): The game is designed to occupy a small portion of the screen, allowing players to multitask while managing their farm. It can be positioned at the bottom or side of the screen and played in either landscape or portrait mode.
- Multiple maps with unique challenges (weight 0.05): The game features multiple maps or farms that can be unlocked, each with unique layouts and challenges. Unlocking new maps often requires completing objectives on previous maps, providing replay value and encouraging players to adapt their strategies.
- Robot-themed progression (weight 0.02): The game features a robot theme, with robots performing tasks and upgrading items. Progression is gradual, requiring time spent growing crops and berries to unlock more efficient plants.
- Rusty manages the farm (weight 0.01): Rusty manages the farm, performing actions like watering plants and constructing structures. A priority list feature allows players to select which activity Rusty should perform first.
- Farm customization and upgrades (weight 0.01): Players can customize their farm by placing buildings, making upgrades, and organizing layouts. The game allows for both efficient placement to maximize currency earnings and decorative placement to create aesthetically pleasing farms.
- Focus mode slows production (weight 0.01): The game includes a 'Focus Mode' that slows down the game's pace, but it may reduce rewards. This mode can be useful for players who want to concentrate on other tasks while the game runs in the background.
- Giant crops require clicking (weight 0.01): Planting seeds in a 2x2 area can result in giant crops that require repeated clicking to harvest. Better crops reduce the frequency of required player interaction.
- Clicking Rusty's house grants resources (weight 0.01): Clicking on Rusty's house grants resources, offering a clicker-style option to earn currency. This provides an alternative to idle gameplay for players who prefer active engagement.

Performance notes:
- Lightweight and runs smoothly (weight 0.06): The game is well-optimized and lightweight, consuming minimal resources (RAM and CPU). This allows it to run smoothly, even on older or low-end computers, and can be run in the background while performing other tasks. Some players run the game at the bottom of their screen while multitasking.
- Minimal bugs encountered (weight 0.01): Many reviewers report encountering very few or no bugs during their playthroughs. This suggests a stable and polished game experience.
- White screen and overlay issues (weight 0.01): Some players have reported a full white screen instead of the actual game content. NVIDIA overlay also does not work with the game.
- Colorkey setting causes issues (weight 0.01): The default 'colorkey' setting in the graphics options causes severe frame rate issues and needs to be changed to 'alpha'.
- Always on top setting issue (weight 0): There is an option to keep the game always on top, but Firefox sometimes ignores this setting.
- Small screen size visibility (weight 0): Due to the screen size, it's difficult to clearly see the activities of NPCs and animals, as well as the appearance of crops, when the game is minimized at the bottom of the screen.

Recommendations:
- Great background/multitasking game (weight 0.43): A key feature is its suitability as a background game while working, studying, or multitasking. Reviewers appreciate its unobtrusive design and the ability to check in periodically, making it a good fit for those seeking a low-engagement experience or a 'desktop toy'.

- Appeals to specific neurotypes (weight 0.01): The game is described as 'Autistic approved' and suitable for people with ADHD, suggesting it caters well to individuals with specific neurodevelopmental conditions.
- RAM usage may be high (weight 0.01): One reviewer notes that the game may not be suitable for computers with limited RAM (8GB), suggesting Stardew Valley as an alternative. This indicates potential performance issues on lower-end systems.
- Contains memes instead of feedback (weight 0): Some reviewers use memes, jokes, or sarcasm instead of feedback, such as 'Rusty is love. Rusty is life.' These points do not provide constructive feedback.

Other player notes:
- Plays as desktop gadget (weight 0.05): The game is designed to be played in a windowed mode, often as a narrow strip at the edge of the screen, allowing users to work or browse the web while playing. It can be configured to stay on top of other applications and prevent the computer from going to sleep.
- Minimal story, relaxing farm life (weight 0.02): The game features a character named Rusty, a retired firefighter, and evokes a relaxing farm life. The story is minimal and lacks a cohesive narrative.
- Variable and potentially long playtime (weight 0.02): Players report varying game lengths, from 10 to 200 hours, with some intentionally extending playtime to have the game as a companion during work or study. Some reviewers became addicted quickly and gifted the game to friends or colleagues.
