About the Game
==============
The Beginning of it All.
A remake of the 2004 game METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER, with the same gripping story and engrossing world, now with all new graphics and 3D audio that enhance the jungle atmosphere. Get ready for the ultimate survival stealth action experience.
**The Cold War Crisis that started it all**
In the middle of the Cold War, Naked Snake, the man who would later be known as Big Boss, infiltrates the Soviet Union to escort a defecting scientist, Sokolov. However, the mission ends in failure when Snake's mentor—The Boss, a soldier known as the mother of special forces—betrays him, and Sokolov is captured by Colonel Volgin of the GRU.
One week later, Snake returns to Soviet territory to rescue Sokolov and eliminate The Boss—a mission that will mark the start of a new legend, a mission that will mark the start of a new legend, against the backdrop of the ever-changing march of history.
**Everything you love, and more**
The story, characters, voice acting, gameplay, and music that made the original a sensation return, remade for modern consoles. This evolutionary leap breathes new life into every cutscene, and rebuilds every corner of the world.
**Gorgeously rendered graphics**
With Unreal Engine 5, expansive stages are rendered with cutting-edge technology. Incredible new graphics bring the wild growth of the jungles, forests, and swamps to life in exquisite detail. Characters are rendered in such fine detail that facial wrinkles, pores, and even separate eye and iris movements are visible, allowing for rich and emotive facial animations.
**Authentic to life portrayals**
The battle damage system has been upgraded, with the wear and tear of Snake's clothes, as well as bruises and bullet wounds on his body, reflected in real time. Injuries will leave their mark on Snake's body permanently, telling a story of each player's unique journey through the game.
**Deeply immersive experiences**
Players can elect for a newly added, more modern control style. These intuitive controls let you focus entirely on the game, and the immersive thrills of the survival stealth experience. You can also choose to play with a classic control style that more closely recreates the feel of the original game.

What players like:
- Faithful & Enhanced Remake (weight 1): The remake is overwhelmingly lauded for its extreme faithfulness to the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Reviewers appreciate that the core story, characters, and atmosphere are preserved, while modern graphics, updated controls, and quality-of-life improvements enhance the experience without altering its essence.
- Stunning Visuals & Performance (weight 0.6): Players consistently praise the game's breathtaking graphics, powered by Unreal Engine 5, noting significant improvements over the original. Many report smooth gameplay and stable performance, especially on higher-end PCs, with minimal to no crashes or frame drops.
- Modernized Controls & QoL (weight 0.35): The introduction of modernized controls, including an over-the-shoulder camera and crouch-walking, is highly appreciated for making the game more accessible and fluid. Players also value quality-of-life improvements like quick camo and cure menus, which streamline gameplay while retaining the original's strategic depth.
- Captivating Story & Characters (weight 0.3): The game's narrative, characters, and cinematic presentation are consistently highlighted as exceptional. Reviewers emphasize the story's depth, emotional impact, and engaging plot, which remains as compelling as the original, drawing in both veterans and newcomers.
- Positive Player Experience (weight 0.24): Many players report a highly enjoyable and problem-free experience, often expressing satisfaction with their purchase and the game's overall quality. They note a surprising lack of bugs, glitches, or significant performance issues on their systems, contributing to a positive impression.
- Iconic Audio & Voice Acting (weight 0.09): The game's soundtrack, including new arrangements of the 'Snake Eater' theme, is praised for its excellence. Reviewers also appreciate the retention of the original voice acting, with some updated lines, ensuring continuity and enhancing the game's immersive atmosphere.

Common complaints:
- Severe Performance and Optimization Issues (weight 0.65): The game suffers from widespread and critical performance problems across various hardware configurations, including high-end PCs. Players report constant stuttering, low frame rates, frequent crashes, and poor optimization, making the game difficult or even impossible to play for many. This is often attributed to the use of Unreal Engine 5.
- High Price for Limited Improvements (weight 0.54): Many players feel the game is significantly overpriced, especially given the perceived lack of substantial gameplay innovation and the numerous technical issues. The consensus is that the game's content and quality do not justify its AAA price tag, leading to accusations of a 'cash grab.'
- Outdated Gameplay and Design (weight 0.53): Players widely criticize the game for its lack of modernization, feeling more like a remaster than a true remake. Many aspects, including controls, level design, and core mechanics, are perceived as outdated and frustrating, failing to evolve beyond the original PS2 era. This leads to a less engaging experience for both new and returning players.
- Graphical Glitches and Animation Stiffness (weight 0.17): Despite the graphical update, players report various visual issues, including models popping in and out, flickering, and artifacting during cutscenes and gameplay. Character animations are often described as stiff, unnatural, or 'PS2-era,' creating a jarring contrast with the updated graphics.
- Frequent Loading Screens (weight 0.06): The game is heavily criticized for its numerous and often lengthy loading screens between small, segmented areas. This breaks immersion and disrupts the flow of gameplay, feeling archaic compared to modern game design standards.
- Konami's Perceived Lack of Effort (weight 0.05): A segment of the player base expresses disappointment with Konami, accusing them of being lazy, not taking enough risks with the remake, and prioritizing profit over quality. This sentiment is fueled by the game's technical issues, high price, and perceived lack of innovation compared to other modern remakes.

Gameplay feedback:
- Modernized & Legacy Control Options (weight 0.36): The game offers both modernized controls, including an over-the-shoulder camera, crouch walking, and movement while aiming, and a 'Legacy' mode that replicates the original game's controls and camera. This provides flexibility for both new players and veterans.
- Quality of Life Improvements (weight 0.3): Several quality-of-life features have been added, such as quick menus for changing camouflage and accessing codec calls, making gameplay smoother and more convenient. The ability to quickly swap outfits is also noted.
- Faithful Recreation of Original (weight 0.27): The game is a highly faithful recreation of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, preserving the original story, cutscenes, voice acting, music, level design, and core mechanics. Many consider it more of a 'premium remaster' than a full remake.
- MGSV-Inspired Gameplay Elements (weight 0.11): The new control scheme and some gameplay mechanics, such as the third-person camera and fluid movement, are heavily influenced by Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. This offers a more modern feel while still retaining the essence of MGS3.
- Visual & Performance Options (weight 0.07): The game includes visual filters, such as a 'Legacy' filter to mimic the PS2's color grading, and options for 30 or 60 FPS. While generally appreciated, the 60 FPS lock and lack of ultrawide support are noted limitations.
- Strong Stealth Focus (weight 0.06): The game maintains its core identity as a stealth-action title, emphasizing infiltration, evasion, and tactical takedowns. Players appreciate the immersive and satisfying stealth mechanics, which are central to the experience.
- Bonus Content & Replayability (weight 0.06): The game includes bonus content like the 'Snake vs Monkey' mini-game and 'Guy Savage Δ', adding to its replayability. The main story offers a decent playtime, with options for extended exploration.
- Future Multiplayer Mode (weight 0.03): A multiplayer mode is planned for a future update, with some players noting it will be unlocked in late 2025. This indicates ongoing development and potential for new content.
- Tranq Pistol Bullet Drop (weight 0.02): A new gameplay element introduces significant bullet drop for the tranquilizer pistol, particularly affecting headshots at longer ranges. This adds a layer of realism and challenge to stealth engagements.
- Minor Player Observations (weight 0.02): Based on limited and varied feedback, players noted issues like poor visibility in some areas and occasional crashes, which some resolved by switching to old-school controls. These are individual experiences rather than widespread issues.

Performance notes:
- Stable Performance for Many (weight 0.51): A significant number of players, especially those with mid-to-high-end PCs, report smooth and stable performance, often achieving a consistent 60 FPS with minimal stutters or crashes. This positive experience is frequently noted even on high or ultra settings, sometimes utilizing upscaling technologies like DLSS or FSR.
- 60 FPS Cap is Common (weight 0.21): The game is frequently capped at 60 FPS, which is a point of discussion among players. While some find it acceptable and even unnoticeable due to the game's pacing and stable performance, others desire an uncapped frame rate, noting that attempts to uncap it can lead to issues.
- Optimization Concerns Exist (weight 0.2): Despite many positive reports, a notable portion of the player base expresses concerns about the game's optimization, particularly for an Unreal Engine 5 title. Some experience performance issues, frame drops, and stutters, especially in specific areas or on lower-end hardware, leading to calls for further optimization.
- Upscaling Technologies Improve Performance (weight 0.14): DLSS and FSR are frequently mentioned as effective tools for improving performance and maintaining stable frame rates, especially at higher resolutions or settings. Players often use these technologies to achieve a smoother experience without significant visual degradation.
- Crashes and Bugs are Present (weight 0.09): While many players report a bug-free experience, some have encountered occasional crashes, particularly during cutscenes or when changing areas. A few users experienced more severe crashing issues, preventing them from playing the game.
- Ultrawide Support is Missing (weight 0.02): The game currently lacks native ultrawide monitor support, forcing players with such setups to play in 16:9 resolution or rely on third-party mods for a proper ultrawide experience.
- Driver Updates Can Resolve Issues (weight 0.01): Updating graphics drivers, particularly Nvidia drivers, has been reported by some players to fix crashes and improve overall performance, suggesting that driver compatibility can be a factor.
- Poor Performance on Handhelds (weight 0.01): The game reportedly performs poorly on handheld devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, with issues such as low frame rates, graphical glitches, and a lack of shadows.
- Adjusting Settings Improves Stability (weight 0.01): Lowering specific graphical settings, especially shadows, or opting for high/medium presets instead of ultra, can significantly improve frame rates and overall stability for players experiencing performance issues.

Recommendations:
- Great for Fans & Newcomers (weight 0.38): Many players, both long-time fans and newcomers, highly recommend the game, praising its faithfulness to the original and updated graphics. It's often seen as an excellent entry point for new players and a nostalgic re-experience for veterans, despite some reservations.
- Mixed Reception & Purchase Advice (weight 0.37): Player sentiment is highly divided, with many recommending the game enthusiastically while an equally significant portion advises caution due to various issues. A common recommendation is to wait for a sale or significant patches before purchasing, especially for those who have played the original or are new to the series.
- Performance & Optimization Issues (weight 0.15): A major point of contention is the game's technical performance on PC, including frame rate limitations, stuttering, and crashes. Many players recommend waiting for optimization patches and warn against buying the game in its current state, especially if their PC specifications are not high-end.
- Faithful Remake, Modernized Classic (weight 0.11): The game is widely regarded as a faithful remake that successfully modernizes a classic. While some veterans note the lack of significant new content beyond visuals and controls, many appreciate the updated experience and consider it a definitive way to play the game.
- Original vs. Remake Debate (weight 0.06): There's a notable debate on whether the remake surpasses or replaces the original. Some argue the original or Master Collection is still superior, especially for newcomers or those seeking the authentic experience, while others believe the remake is the new definitive version.
- Desire for More MGS Remakes (weight 0.04): A strong sentiment among players is the hope for similar remake treatment for other Metal Gear Solid titles, particularly MGS1, MGS2, and MGS4. This indicates a positive reception to the remake's approach, despite its technical flaws.

Other player notes:
- Nostalgia and game's legacy (weight 0.28): The game strongly evokes nostalgia for long-time fans, with many stating it matches their idealized memory of the original. Players consistently praise MGS3 as a timeless masterpiece and one of the best games in the series, if not of all time.
- Desire for more MGS remakes (weight 0.25): Many players, both long-time fans and newcomers, express a strong desire for Konami to remake other Metal Gear Solid titles, particularly MGS1, MGS2, and MGS4, in a similar fashion. There's also significant interest in a Peace Walker remake and a PC release of MGS4.
- Performance and optimization issues (weight 0.22): A significant number of players report performance issues, including frame rate caps, lack of ultrawide support, and general optimization problems. While some attribute this to outdated hardware, many hope for official patches to address these concerns.
- Anticipation for Foxhunt mode (weight 0.15): Players are looking forward to the upcoming Foxhunt multiplayer mode, which is expected to be released in a few months. Its absence at launch is noted, but there's optimism for its future inclusion.
- Debate on 'remake' vs. 'remaster' (weight 0.13): There's a recurring discussion among players about whether the game is a true remake or closer to an enhanced remaster. Many feel it's a carbon copy with updated visuals, lacking significant gameplay innovations or a complete re-imagining.
- Unreal Engine 5 vs. Fox Engine (weight 0.13): Many players question Konami's choice to use Unreal Engine 5 instead of the Fox Engine, which was developed internally for MGSV. There's a sentiment that the Fox Engine might have offered better optimization or a more authentic feel.
- Konami's past controversies (weight 0.11): Some players express lingering resentment towards Konami for past actions, such as the departure of Hideo Kojima and the release of MGS Survive. While some are willing to overlook this for a good game, others view any MGS game without Kojima as sacrilege.
- Kojima's credited involvement (weight 0.07): Players acknowledge and appreciate Konami's decision to credit Hideo Kojima and the original team extensively in the game, despite his non-involvement in the remake's development. This gesture is seen positively by many fans.

Emotions:
- Satisfaction (weight 0.32): Players are highly satisfied with the remake's faithfulness to the original game, often citing improved graphics, modernized controls (including the option for legacy controls), and overall quality and performance. Many appreciate the game running smoothly, the updated visuals, and the inclusion of quality-of-life changes that enhance the classic experience without altering its core.
- Disappointment (weight 0.17): Disappointment stems primarily from technical issues such as poor optimization, a 60 FPS cap, and lack of ultrawide support, which many consider unacceptable for a modern AAA title. Players also express dissatisfaction with the high price point relative to the perceived lack of significant new content or innovation beyond graphical updates, and some find the unchanged AI and outdated mechanics problematic.
- Frustration (weight 0.14): Frustration is largely driven by severe performance issues, including frequent crashes, stuttering, and frame rate drops, even on high-end hardware. The 60 FPS lock and lack of ultrawide support are also major sources of annoyance, alongside clunky controls, unresponsive gameplay, and tedious mechanics like the healing system or frequent loading screens.

Players are thankful for the opportunity to replay a beloved game with updated graphics and for the careful, faithful approach to the remake.
