About the Game
==============
“FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse” was released in Japan in 2008 as the fourth game in the FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO series. Following the remastering of “FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Maiden of Black Water,” the series masterpiece is being brought back to life with upgraded graphics.
**■About the Game**
-------------------
A group of children mysteriously disappeared during a festival on Rogetsu Isle. Although they were found, they had lost their memories. Now they have returned to the island as teenagers. The girls rely on the Camera Obscura, a camera with the power to capture and seal away unthinkable horrors, and the faint beam of their flashlight while exploring various locations and fending off the ghosts that attack them as they attempt to discover the truth of their haunting past.
**\-Camera Obscura**
This is an old camera with the ability to repel vengeful ghosts and seal away their power by photographing them. As such, it is an indispensable item throughout the game. The Camera Obscura can be used as a weapon against ghosts by spotting them through the viewfinder and taking photos of them to inflict damage. It also plays a major role in the girls' investigation, as its special power allows them to see the keys that allow them to find their way through new areas.
**\-Exploring Rogetsu Isle**
Explore the dimly lit Western-style mansions and abandoned hospitals on the island by relying on the moonlight and the faint beam of your flashlight. Progress the story by interacting with items and places that spark your interest. From past newspaper articles and notes, you uncover the vile secrets of the past, unravel the lost memories of the protagonist, and discover the truth.
**■Features**
-------------
**\-Improved Graphics**
In-game movies and character models have been improved to make the story and characters more appealing. In addition, the graphics have been improved for each platform. The rendering of shadows and the beam of the flashlight has been refined so players can experience more realistic horror.
**\-New Snap Mode**
Pose characters and ghosts freely to create haunting memories in the new snap mode. Perhaps you may even take unexpected spirit photos by accident...
**\-New Costumes**
The original costume lineup has been altered slightly, and new costumes have been added. Change the characters' costumes to experience the investigation in different ways.
Note: “FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse Digital Deluxe Edition,” which includes the full game, is also available for purchase. Please be careful to avoid making a redundant purchase.

What players like:
- Excellent Series Entry & Port (weight 0.99): Players highly praise the game as an excellent entry in the Fatal Frame series, often calling it one of the best or their favorite. Many are thrilled about its long-awaited PC release and localization, finding it a strong and enjoyable experience for both new players and long-time fans.
- Masterful Horror Atmosphere (weight 0.68): The game excels in creating a terrifying and immersive horror atmosphere through its detailed graphics, unsettling sound design, and effective use of psychological tension rather than jump scares. Players consistently highlight its ability to evoke a constant sense of unease and fear.
- Captivating & Rich Story (weight 0.34): The game's story is highly praised for being captivating, well-written, and full of interesting twists and mysteries. Its multi-perspective narrative and rich lore, often revealed through collectibles, keep players deeply engaged and satisfied.
- Impressive Remastered Graphics (weight 0.28): The remaster is lauded for its significant graphical improvements, including higher resolution textures, better lighting, and updated character models. Players appreciate the polished look and feel, noting that the visuals enhance the overall atmosphere.
- Engaging & Improved Combat (weight 0.27): The combat system, centered around the unique ghost-shooting mechanic, is found to be fun, satisfying, and challenging. Players enjoy the tension created by the risk-reward mechanics and the improved, smoother controls compared to previous versions.
- Superior to Maiden of Black Water (weight 0.19): Many players note that this game's PC port and overall quality are significantly better than Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, citing improvements in optimization, graphics, plot, and gameplay mechanics.
- Moving & Memorable Ending (weight 0.12): The game's ending is highly impactful, with players praising its emotional depth, beautiful music, and satisfying conclusion. The sound design, particularly the ending BGM, is noted for enhancing the experience.
- Appreciated New Costumes (weight 0.07): The addition of new and revamped costumes is a welcome feature, with players finding the new outfits appealing and a good replacement for previously removed Nintendo-themed ones.

Common complaints:
- Clunky and Outdated Controls (weight 0.45): Players consistently report that the game's controls are clunky, unresponsive, and feel outdated, especially for PC players using keyboard and mouse. This issue significantly impacts the overall gameplay experience and makes the game difficult to play.
- Weakest Franchise Entry (weight 0.35): The game is widely considered the weakest entry in the franchise, with players noting it's less scary, less immersive, and generally not as good as previous Fatal Frame titles, including Maiden of Black Water.
- Overpriced for Content (weight 0.26): Many players feel the game is significantly overpriced, especially given its short length and the perceived lack of substantial improvements in the remaster. The high price is a major deterrent for potential buyers.
- Poor Texture Quality (weight 0.24): The game's textures, particularly environmental ones, are frequently criticized for being low-resolution, pixelated, and appearing directly upscaled from the original Wii version. This significantly detracts from the visual quality and immersion.
- Lazy Remaster Port (weight 0.22): The remaster is largely seen as a 'lazy' or 'violent' port with minimal effort put into significant improvements. Players feel it's a cash grab that offers little beyond basic changes from the original Wii version.
- Frustrating Combat Design (weight 0.19): Combat encounters are frequently described as frustrating and poorly designed, often due to narrow spaces, teleporting enemies, and the character's poor mobility. The lack of a clear dodge mechanic further exacerbates these issues.
- Cramped Map Design (weight 0.16): The game's environments are often described as cramped and narrow, leading to repetitive exploration and frustrating combat encounters, especially when dealing with multiple enemies or teleporting ghosts.
- Excessive Backtracking (weight 0.08): The game features a significant amount of backtracking through the same areas, which, combined with fixed save points and the potential to miss items, can lead to tedious repetition and loss of progress.
- Cutscene Technical Issues (weight 0.07): Players report technical issues with cutscenes, including freezing, colorful screens, and unskippable segments that can prevent progression. Some cutscenes also suffer from pixelated textures or an unremovable grain effect.

Gameplay feedback:
- Camera-based combat system (weight 0.3): The core gameplay loop involves using a special camera, the Camera Obscura, to exorcise spirits. Players must photograph ghosts at precise moments to deal maximum damage and progress through the haunted environments.
- Multiple characters, linear story (weight 0.26): The game features multiple playable characters, each with unique abilities and storylines that generally do not intersect. It has a linear story with fixed save points and a New Game Plus mode, encouraging multiple playthroughs to experience all character perspectives and unlock content.
- Classic survival horror pacing (weight 0.26): The game offers a classic survival horror experience with a well-paced narrative and manageable difficulty. A first playthrough typically takes 9-15 hours, with replayability for achievement hunting or faster subsequent runs.
- Wii remaster, classic design (weight 0.15): This game is a remaster of a 2008 Wii title, retaining its original 'classic' combat design and slow character movement, which is typical for the franchise. It lacks motion controls and is best played with a controller.
- Self-contained island mystery (weight 0.14): The story centers on a group of amnesiac girls returning to Rogetsu Island to uncover traumatic memories and the mystery of the 'Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.' While part of the Fatal Frame series, its narrative is largely self-contained and less connected to previous entries.
- Scripted ghost encounters (weight 0.13): Ghost encounters are primarily pre-scripted, with very few random spawns. Combat emphasizes precise timing for 'Fatal Frame' shots, which deal significant damage and can stagger enemies, though some ghosts have challenging attack patterns.
- Fatal Frame series comparison (weight 0.09): The game is part of the Fatal Frame series, known for its J-horror themes and camera-based combat. It shares core mechanics but differs from Fatal Frame 5 in aspects like movement speed, grading systems, and the absence of chapter select.
- Camera upgrades and photo mode (weight 0.09): The game includes a progression system where players earn points to purchase items, unlock new camera lenses, and upgrade equipment. A photo mode is also available from early in the game.
- Simpler combat than FF5 (weight 0.06): Combat is generally considered more basic and less complex than in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, focusing more on timing. Despite this, the difficulty remains relatively easy across settings.
- Flashlight item discovery (weight 0.05): A key mechanic for item discovery involves using the flashlight. Players must illuminate areas to reveal hidden items, which typically glow blue once detected.

Performance notes:
- Excellent PC Optimization (weight 0.22): Players widely report that the game is very well optimized for PC, running smoothly and maintaining stable frame rates even on older hardware. Many experienced no crashes or significant technical issues, indicating a high-quality port.
- Resolution Selection Fixes (weight 0.07): Some users encountered an issue where high resolutions were not selectable in-game. This was often resolved by adjusting DPI scaling settings in Windows or by restarting the game after a system save file was generated.
- Gamepad Improves Stuttering (weight 0.06): One specific issue mentioned was stuttering that could be mitigated by using a gamepad, even when preferring keyboard and mouse, suggesting that the control device might influence performance for some users.
- Mixed Graphics Quality (weight 0.03): While character models and overall graphics are praised as beautiful, some players noted that certain environmental textures (walls, floors) and animations still appear dated despite the remaster.

Recommendations:
- Highly Recommended Horror Experience (weight 0.85): The game is widely recommended, especially for fans of the Fatal Frame series, Japanese horror, and psychological horror. Many reviewers praise its atmosphere, story, and characters, considering it a solid entry in the genre and a good starting point for newcomers, despite some caveats.
- Desire for More Fatal Frame Ports (weight 0.39): Many players express a strong desire for Koei Tecmo to port or remaster the earlier Fatal Frame games (especially 1, 2, and 3) to PC/Steam, and hope for new entries in the series. They see purchasing this game as a way to support future releases.
- Controller Recommended for Play (weight 0.08): Players strongly advise using a controller for the best experience, as keyboard and mouse controls are considered clunky. The game's older mechanics might require patience for new players.
- Completion Requires Guides (weight 0.07): Achieving 100% completion is noted as very difficult without guides due to numerous collectibles. New players are advised to start on Easy mode and save frequently to avoid missing ghost photos.
- Gameplay Tips and Warnings (weight 0.06): Players suggest a blind first playthrough for maximum horror. There are also specific tips like mashing evade, avoiding the game if sensitive to hospital settings, and playing with normal costumes for atmosphere.
- Purchase During Sale (weight 0.06): While some fans are willing to pay full price to support the series, many recommend waiting for a sale (around 50% off or $20 max) to purchase the game, suggesting it's better value at a reduced price.

Other player notes:
- Accessible yet complex story (weight 0.16): The game's story is largely standalone from previous entries, making it accessible to new players. However, its fragmented nature and reliance on in-game documents (like journal entries) mean that careful reading is necessary to fully grasp the plot and its themes, such as dementia and loss of self.
- Remaster of a Japan-exclusive Wii title (weight 0.13): The game is a remaster of Fatal Frame 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, which was originally a Japan-exclusive Wii title from 2008. Its worldwide release on multiple modern platforms in 2023 is a significant event for fans.
- Limited language localization (weight 0.08): There is a clear demand for more language options, with players noting the absence of official Russian, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese translations. Fan-made translations exist for some languages like Thai and Italian, indicating community effort to fill this gap.
- Nintendo costumes removed (weight 0.06): Due to copyright issues, Nintendo-specific costumes and skins from the original Wii version were removed in this remaster. This is a notable change for players familiar with the original release.
- Effective sound design (weight 0.03): The game is praised for its effective sound design, which contributes significantly to an unsettling and tense atmosphere, enhancing the horror experience.
- Default language issue (weight 0.03): Some users experienced the game launching in English by default, with a workaround available to revert to Japanese through in-game options. The cause is speculated to be related to system environment or installation integrity.
- Collectibles require multiple playthroughs (weight 0.02): Missing collectible items require a second playthrough to obtain, which can impact completionist players.
- Improved enemy shake-off mechanic (weight 0.02): The mechanic for shaking off enemies has been improved, now requiring rotation of both analog sticks, which is a specific gameplay refinement.
- Noise effect fixed (weight 0.01): A de-noising program was used to address a noise effect in the game, suggesting a technical fix or improvement.
- Uncensored mod in development (weight 0.01): Development for an uncensored mod has begun, indicating player interest in modifying game content, potentially related to visual elements.

Emotions:
- Satisfaction (weight 0.3): Players expressed satisfaction primarily due to the game's strong horror elements, including its effective atmosphere, sound design, and compelling story. The quality of the remaster, particularly improved graphics, controls, and smooth performance on PC and Steam Deck, also significantly contributed to positive experiences, making the game feel like a well-executed classic horror title.
- Frustration (weight 0.16): Frustration stemmed mainly from technical and control issues. Players frequently cited clunky or unresponsive controls, slow character movement, and an uncomfortable camera. Additionally, some found the combat tedious, item scarcity challenging, and certain puzzles or repetitive elements frustrating, especially given the perceived high price of the port.
- Disappointment (weight 0.12): Disappointment was largely driven by the game's high price in relation to the perceived minimal effort in the remaster. Players felt the port lacked significant graphical improvements, had outdated mechanics, and offered poor value for money. - Excitement (weight 0.07): Excitement was generated by the game's captivating horror atmosphere, engaging story, and challenging gameplay. The game's successful Western release also fueled optimism for continued support and new entries in the franchise.
- Joy (weight 0.03): Joy was expressed by players finally able to experience the game, especially on PC, often after a long wait. The quality of the remaster, beautiful character models, and the overall fun and engaging horror experience contributed to a sense of delight and enjoyment.

- Anger (weight 0.02): Anger was primarily directed at the game's high price relative to its perceived short length and the poor quality of the remaster and PC port. Players were also upset by the lack of clear communication regarding controller-only support and the absence of improved PC controls.
