Official game description:
New This Season
===============
Something has awoken in The Devil’s Roar and its impact can be felt across the seas! The Dark Brethren and those in their employ have made use of their newly smuggled Black Powder Barrels, blasting through solid rock to expose what they’ve been searching for. But as a result, a formidable Ancient fighting force has been roused. Will you be able to succeed against the fabled Eternal Guard?
**Sanctuaries of the Banished**
The Dark Brethren have finally revealed what they needed all those Black Powder Barrels for: archaeological excavations! Across The Devil’s Roar, lost Sanctuaries of the Banished have been unearthed, locked tight but hiding intriguing secrets – and, of course, buckets of loot.
To get your hands on it, and maybe find out more about how these Ancient structures came to be, you’ll have to hunt down the keys to these Sanctuaries of the Banished and try your luck against the sentinels that still seek to protect them…
**Find the Keys**
Even so many years after their disappearance, the Banished Ancients aren’t willing to hand over their treasures so easily. If you want to enter their Sanctuaries, you’ll need to track down a key from one of the Eternal Guard keeping it safe!
**Chests of Banished Tribute**
The excavations have unearthed more than Sanctuaries – they’ve revealed hoards of new treasures too! These high-value chests can only be found within an opened Sanctuary of the Banished, but if you can find one and bring it back safely, the Trading Companies will reward you handsomely.
**The Eternal Guard Has Awoken!**
The Banished Ancients may be gone, but their loyal Eternal Guard have risen once again to defend their Sanctuaries! Sarcophagi have started emerging across the Sea of Thieves, and pirates who dare to approach and light the candles are liable to find themselves in a battle for their lives.
The Eternal Guard will fight with everything they have to protect their keys, and they have more tricks up their sleeve than you might expect from the ghostly undead. If you want to walk away with your prize, not to mention your life, you’ll need to keep your weapons close and your eyes peeled…
**Armed and Dangerous**
The Eternal Guard are no mere mindless drones; these warriors were trained for combat and even now you’ll find them a cut above your average skeleton or Phantom threat. The Guard are known to be more than proficient with hunting spears and blowpipes, so stay light on your feet!
**Cunning Strategists**
Weapons aren’t the only tricks the Eternal Guard have learned to employ. In combat, they can disappear in a burst of poison gas, before reappearing to strike from the shadows. Even in defeat they reveal one last surprise: an explosive deathblow intended to take their attacker with them!
**Far and Wide**
While the Sanctuaries of the Banished can only be found in The Devil’s Roar, their undead guardians roam further afield. Their sarcophagi can be found on any large island throughout the Sea of Thieves, so keep an eye out for telltale signs the next time you head ashore.
**New Seasonal Rewards**
A new Season means a brand new set of rewards, unlocked by climbing through 100 levels of Renown! Earn cosmetics, gold, Doubloons and even Ancient Coins as you rise through the ranks by living the pirate life.

- Regular content updates (weight 0.17): Frequent updates and seasonal content keep the game fresh and evolving. Players appreciate the developers’ commitment to adding new mechanics, events, and activities, which maintain long-term engagement.
- Well-designed ship mechanics (weight 0.12): Ship mechanics, including sailing, cannons, and boarding, are praised for their realism and depth. Players enjoy the tactical aspects of ship combat and the dynamic interactions with wind, water, and other ships.
- Balanced and fair progression (weight 0.09): The game avoids pay-to-win mechanics, ensuring all players have equal opportunities. Progression is skill-based, and cosmetics are the primary purchasable items, which players appreciate for maintaining fairness and balance.

Common complaints:
- Conflicting PvP and PvE design (weight 0.69): The game's core design struggles to balance PvP and PvE, forcing players into unwanted interactions. PvP mechanics disrupt PvE experiences, and PvE-only modes limit access to full game content, creating frustration for both playstyles.
- Toxic and unwelcoming community (weight 0.54): The player base is frequently described as toxic, with griefing, cheating, and harassment targeting new or solo players. This creates a hostile environment that drives away casual or less experienced players.
- Persistent bugs and stability issues (weight 0.42): Long-standing bugs, crashes, and performance issues plague the game, with some problems persisting for years. Updates often introduce new bugs or fail to address existing ones, frustrating players.
- Lack of meaningful progression (weight 0.37): The game lacks a traditional progression system, with rewards limited to cosmetics. This demotivates players, as there are no tangible advantages to long-term play or skill development.
- Poor solo player experience (weight 0.37): The game is designed for crews, making solo play difficult and punishing. Solo players struggle with multi-tasking, toxic encounters, and a lack of support, leading to burnout and frustration.
- Rampant cheating and exploits (weight 0.36): Cheating is pervasive, with hackers using aimbots, teleportation, and other exploits to disrupt gameplay. The lack of effective anti-cheat measures exacerbates the problem, making PvP and PvE modes unplayable for many.
- Limited and repetitive content (weight 0.36): Quests and missions are often shallow, repetitive, or poorly designed, with little narrative depth. The lack of variety and meaningful updates makes long-term play feel monotonous.
- Overpriced and not value-driven (weight 0.17): The game is criticized for its high price, especially given its flaws, repetitive content, and lack of depth. Many players feel it is only worth buying on discount.
- Safer Seas mode limitations (weight 0.1): Safer Seas mode restricts progression and content, making it feel like a half-baked solution for players seeking a PvE-focused experience. Arbitrary limitations discourage its use.
- Broken matchmaking system (weight 0.09): Matchmaking pairs players unfairly, often placing newcomers against experienced or toxic players. This exacerbates frustration and makes the game feel unbalanced and unwelcoming.

Gameplay feedback:
- PvP and PvE balance (weight 0.43): The game offers both competitive PvP (ship battles, raids) and cooperative PvE (skeleton forts, tall tales) modes. Player feedback highlights the tension between high-seas PvP and safer PvE alternatives like 'Safer Seas'.
- Core ship-based gameplay (weight 0.42): The game revolves around ship exploration, combat, and management in an open world. Players engage in PvP/PvE battles, customization, and cooperative crew mechanics across different ship types (sloops, galleons).
- Multiplayer and co-op focus (weight 0.35): Teamwork is central, with mechanics requiring coordination (repairs, sailing) and emergent interactions (alliances, betrayals). Solo play is viable but challenging against larger crews.
- Cosmetic-only progression (weight 0.22): Progression systems (emissary levels, cosmetics) lack mechanical upgrades, focusing on unlocks like ship skins and titles. Some players criticize the grind for leaderboard ranks.
- Pirate-themed sandbox (weight 0.22): The game immerses players in a pirate fantasy with treasure hunting, naval combat, and procedural characters. Freedom to choose playstyles (romanticized vs. traditional piracy) is emphasized.
- Dynamic world events (weight 0.14): Random encounters (krakens, skeleton ships, storms) and world events (fort raids, megalodon hunts) create unpredictable gameplay. These events often tie into faction quests and rewards.
- Tall Tales story mode (weight 0.11): Single-player or co-op story missions (Tall Tales) offer structured quests with puzzles and lore. These are praised for adding narrative depth to the sandbox experience.
- Hourglass PvP mode (weight 0.09): Arena-style PvP (Hourglass) provides structured 1v1 or small-team combat in a restricted area. Some players find it repetitive or unbalanced for larger crews.
- Ship customization options (weight 0.07): Players personalize ships and characters with cosmetics (flags, skins, pets). Customization is tied to progression but lacks mechanical impact.

Performance notes:
- Severe server and netcode issues (weight 0.3): Players report persistent lag, high ping, disconnections, and netcode problems like teleportation and hit detection failures. These issues occur even in solo play and disrupt core gameplay mechanics.
- Performance and optimization struggles (weight 0.23): The game suffers from poor optimization, requiring high-end hardware for smooth performance. Players report FPS drops, stutters, and long loading times, even on capable systems.
- Input and hit registration failures (weight 0.08): Players experience significant input delays, hit registration issues, and combat desync, often attributed to server problems. These issues make combat feel unresponsive and unfair.
- Ship customization and physics bugs (weight 0.08): Players report issues with ship customization not saving and buggy physics, which disrupt gameplay and progression. These issues are often tied to broader optimization problems.
- Storage and loading problems (weight 0.06): The game requires significant disk space and suffers from long download/loading times. Some players also report infinite loading screens and login window bugs.

- Safer Seas for beginners (weight 0.1): New or casual players are advised to start in Safer Seas mode to learn the game mechanics and avoid frustration from PvP harassment or toxicity.
- Story missions need improvement (weight 0.03): The game's story missions are criticized for being boring or inaccessible to casual players, suggesting a need for better design and engagement.

- Digital extras add value (weight 0.02): Included extras like the soundtrack and audiobook are appreciated by players, enhancing the game's perceived value beyond core gameplay. These additions cater to lore enthusiasts and collectors.
- Rich lore praised by enthusiasts (weight 0.02): The game's extensive lore is highlighted as a standout feature, with some players jokingly suggesting it warrants academic study. This depth appeals to narrative-driven players.

Emotions:
- Frustration (weight 0.31): Players experience frustration primarily due to toxic PvP dynamics, including cheating, hacking, and griefing, which disrupt fair gameplay and lead to lost progress. Technical issues like lag, server errors, and bugs (e.g., login problems, disappearing loot) further exacerbate the problem, making the experience unreliable and time-consuming.
