Below are summaries of things people say about the game per category.
Each point is assigned a weight that represents how often it is mentioned across all reviews.
What players like:
- Exceptional Gameplay & Design (weight 1): Players widely praise the game as a masterpiece, highlighting its fun, challenging, and fair difficulty. The refined mechanics, satisfying progression, and high replayability contribute to an extraordinarily rewarding experience for both beginners and veterans.
- Outstanding Music & Soundtrack (weight 0.51): The game's music is consistently lauded as excellent, mind-blowing, and a major highlight. Tracks are described as fitting, atmospheric, and highly memorable, significantly enhancing the gameplay and encouraging players to return.
- Strong Touhou Series Entry (weight 0.41): Many consider this the best Touhou game, praising its unique atmosphere, improved mechanics, and nostalgic elements. It's recommended for both new players and long-time fans, standing out for its quality and distinct themes compared to other entries.
- Memorable Characters (weight 0.39): Characters like Koishi and Satori are frequently cited as the best parts of the game, praised for their unique designs, compelling personalities, and significant impact on the game's narrative and appeal. The overall cast is considered memorable and well-designed.
- Immersive Atmosphere & Story (weight 0.22): The game excels in creating a strong, dark, and immersive atmosphere that progresses effectively with the story. Visuals, music, and gameplay elements combine to evoke a sense of ruthless determination, fitting the 'bullet hell' experience.

Common complaints:
- Excessive and Unfair Difficulty (weight 0.5): Players consistently report the game as extraordinarily difficult, often citing it as the hardest they've ever played, even on 'Easy' settings. This high difficulty is perceived as unfair and punishing, leading to frustration and a feeling of being overwhelmed.
- Unbalanced Character Shot Types (weight 0.34): There's a strong consensus that character shot types are unbalanced and generally weak. Marisa, particularly Marisa A and C, is cited as underpowered with poor damage, impractical mechanics, and a larger hitbox, making her less viable compared to other options like Reimu A.
- Problematic Bullet Patterns (weight 0.25): The design of bullet patterns is a major source of frustration. Players describe them as 'stupid,' 'disgusting,' and designed to cause accidental deaths, often forcing bomb usage due to their density and aimed nature.
- Ineffective Bombs (weight 0.15): Bombs are widely considered weak and ineffective. They offer minimal damage, short invincibility, and are often seen as mere I-frames rather than powerful tools, forcing players to rely on them to compensate for difficulty spikes, which detracts from the danmaku experience.
- Technical Issues and Crashes (weight 0.12): A significant number of players experienced critical technical problems, including game crashes, graphical issues, and launching failures. Some even reported that Steam and Windows flagged the game as a virus, preventing it from running.
- EXTRA Stage Balance Issues (weight 0.06): The EXTRA stage presents specific balance problems, including low power gain from enemies, difficulty maximizing communication strength, and mismatched extend distribution, making early sections overly challenging while later parts provide too many extends.

Gameplay feedback:
- High Difficulty Level (weight 0.46): This installment is widely considered one of the most difficult Touhou games, even on Normal difficulty. It requires significant practice, precise dodging, and resource management, making it challenging for both newcomers and series veterans.
- Grazing System is Core (weight 0.34): The game heavily emphasizes bullet grazing, where getting close to bullets increases a 'Communication Strength' gauge. Maxing this gauge automatically collects all on-screen items, boosts score, and is crucial for resource management and high scores.
- Varied Character Shot Types (weight 0.29): The game offers six distinct shot types across different characters and their partners, each with unique shots, bombs, and special abilities. These variations significantly impact gameplay strategy and stage approach.
- Power-as-Bomb Mechanic (weight 0.27): The game utilizes a system where bombs consume 1.00 power, with a maximum power of 4.00 for full firepower. This mechanic forces players to carefully balance offensive capabilities with defensive options, as frequent bombing can lead to a 'low power loop'.
- Life Fragment System (weight 0.21): New lives are primarily obtained by collecting 'life fragments,' which are awarded for defeating boss non-spell or spell cards without taking damage. This system makes no-miss clears and timely bombing critical for survival.
- Strategic Boss Fights (weight 0.2): Boss battles are well-designed, often feeling like puzzles with unique attack patterns that reflect the characters' personalities. Specific strategies and positional dodging are often required to clear them effectively.
- Bosses Adapt to Player (weight 0.14): A unique feature is that certain boss attack patterns, especially for Stage 4 boss Satori, change based on the player's chosen character option. This adds replayability and requires players to adapt their strategies.

Performance notes:
- Windows 11 Display Issues (weight 0.03): Players on Windows 11 are experiencing display problems with Shift-JIS windows, which only resolve if the system's regional language is set to Japanese. This creates an inconvenience for non-Japanese speaking players.
- Linux Compatibility Noted (weight 0.02): A player successfully ran the game on Linux using Proton 5.0.9, indicating potential compatibility for non-Windows operating systems. This is based on limited feedback.
- Patch Functionality Mentioned (weight 0.01): One review briefly mentioned the game's patch functions without further detail or context. This feedback is very limited and lacks specific actionable insights.

Recommendations:
- Highly Recommended Game (weight 0.26): The game receives overwhelmingly positive recommendations, with many players rating it very highly and considering it a must-play, especially for fans of the Touhou series or bullet hell games.
- Not for New Touhou Players (weight 0.25): Many players strongly advise against starting with this game if you are new to the Touhou series or the bullet hell genre. It is considered too difficult for beginners and might deter them from the series.
- Challenging but Rewarding (weight 0.24): This game is noted for its high difficulty, appealing to players who enjoy a significant challenge and are comfortable with repeated retries. It's recommended for those seeking a unique and demanding experience.
- Specific Entry Point Advice (weight 0.22): For new players, other Touhou games like Touhou 6, Mountain of Faith, Imperishable Night, or Perfect Cherry Blossom are suggested as easier starting points before tackling this title.
- Character-Specific Recommendations (weight 0.05): There are specific, albeit somewhat humorous, recommendations for which characters to play, such as Marisa-Nitorin for beginners or Marisa C for a 'complete' experience.
- Gameplay Strategy Tips (weight 0.05): Players offer advice on gameplay, such as practicing specific patterns, using bombs, and even learning to 'give up appropriately' to maintain enjoyment.
- Community and Support (weight 0.04): Some feedback includes lighthearted calls to support the game's creator or to encourage others to play, reflecting a strong community sentiment.
- Stage 5 Difficulty Spike (weight 0.04): Stage 5 is highlighted as a particularly challenging section of the game, with a recommendation to have ample lives before entering it for a smoother clear.
- Practice Tools Recommended (weight 0.02): One player suggests that a third-party practice tool is necessary for this game, implying that its difficulty might require external aids for mastery.
- Translation Guide Suggested (weight 0.01): One reviewer recommends following a specific guide for language translations, indicating that official localization might be lacking or that community efforts are valuable.
- Hope for Re-release (weight 0.01): A player expresses a desire for the game to be re-released, suggesting that its availability might be an issue or that they wish for a wider audience to experience it.

Other player notes:
- Nostalgia and Player Experience (weight 0.21): The game evokes strong feelings of nostalgia for some players, recalling past experiences. The overall meaning and enjoyment of the game are often shaped by the player's personal journey and achievements.
- Supporting the Developer (weight 0.17): Many players view purchasing the game as a way to directly support the developer, ZUN, often likening it to 'buying ZUN a beer.' There is also enthusiasm for the game's release on Steam.
- Requires Skill and Determination (weight 0.16): The game is noted for its high difficulty, forcing players to improve their skills and requiring significant determination to master. Achieving high-level clears, such as NMNB on Lunatic, often involves hundreds or even thousands of hours of playtime.
- Antivirus False Positives (weight 0.11): Players report that Windows Defender and other antivirus software may incorrectly flag the game as a virus due to its unique coding. It is recommended to add the game's Steam folders to the antivirus exclusion list to resolve this.
- Technical Setup for Older Game (weight 0.11): As an older title, the game may require specific technical adjustments. This includes potentially installing DirectX 9.0c, using vsync patches for screen tearing, and configuring controllers with external software for optimal play.
- Lack of Official English Support (weight 0.1): The game does not officially support English or other languages. Players typically resolve this by installing fan-made language patches, such as ThCrap, which can be found online.
- Minor or Limited Feedback (weight 0.08): Several clusters contain very limited or non-actionable feedback, such as general observations about the game's age, specific character mentions, or personal score challenges, which provide minimal insight.
- Anticipation for Future Releases (weight 0.05): Players express interest in future game releases, both for new titles and for older Touhou games to become available on Steam.
- Mental and Emotional Impact (weight 0.04): Some players describe the game as having a significant mental and emotional impact, sometimes leading to feelings of frustration or despair, though this feedback is less constructive.

Emotions:
- Satisfaction (weight 0.22): Players feel satisfied by the game's overall high quality, including its refined mechanics, engaging music, and character design. A significant source of satisfaction comes from overcoming the game's fair but extreme challenges, mastering difficult bullet patterns, and achieving progress or completion, which provides a strong sense of accomplishment.
- Frustration (weight 0.2): Frustration primarily stems from the game's extreme difficulty, particularly specific boss fights (like Orin and Utsuho) and challenging stages (Stage 4 and 5). Technical issues such as game crashes, unlaunchable executables due to false virus detection, and fatal bugs also contribute to player frustration, hindering their ability to play and progress.
- Excitement (weight 0.16): Excitement is generated by the game's high quality, intense bullet hell gameplay, and excellent music, especially character themes. The challenging yet rewarding nature of the game, combined with popular characters and the overall 'peak' experience, creates a thrilling and enjoyable atmosphere for players.
- Admiration (weight 0.09): Players admire the game for its status as a masterpiece, highlighting ZUN's unique art style, creative character designs, and exceptional soundtrack. The game's unique direction, atmosphere, and well-crafted spell cards also contribute to a deep sense of admiration for its overall quality and artistic merit.
- Enjoyment (weight 0.06): Enjoyment is derived from the game's captivating music, engaging characters, and balanced gameplay. Players appreciate the unique support skills, strategic scoring opportunities, and the overall aesthetic, including visuals and stage design, which contribute to a pleasant gaming experience.
- Appreciation (weight 0.04): Players appreciate the game for its demanding nature, which requires practice and experience to master. The excellent background music, flavorful bullet patterns, fitting characters, and the game being a product from Touhou's 'peak period' are highly valued, making it a favorite for many.
- Disappointment (weight 0.04): Disappointment arises from gameplay issues such as bombs potentially ruining the danmaku experience and character imbalances. Players also express disappointment with the difficulty curve, particularly Easy mode not being significantly easier, and technical issues preventing them from playing or recommending the Steam version.
- Challenge (weight 0.04): The game is consistently perceived as highly challenging, requiring strategic decisions regarding lives versus power and presenting difficult bullet patterns. Players find it challenging to achieve a 1-credit clear and navigate complex attacks, even on easier difficulties, necessitating significant practice.
- Anger (weight 0.02): Anger is primarily caused by the game's perceived unreasonable difficulty, particularly specific boss fights and bullet designs that are seen as unfair. Technical issues that render the game 'broken' also provoke anger among players.
- Joy (weight 0.02): Joy comes from the game's beautiful bullet patterns, excellent music, and unique characters, often evoking nostalgia. Players find the game crazy fun despite its difficulty, and experiencing small progress after enduring torment brings a sense of happiness.
- Determination (weight 0.01): Players exhibit determination to clear the game and its EX stage despite the high difficulty, driven by enjoyment of the music and characters. This resolve is also fueled by the effort invested in documenting strategies and the game's ability to instill a 'ruthless determination'.
- Nostalgia (weight 0.01): Nostalgia is triggered by childhood memories and past experiences with the game, connecting players to their history with the series.
- Confusion (weight 0.01): Confusion arises from difficulties with language settings and unpredictable 'first-time kill' attacks from bosses, which can be disorienting for players.
- Affection (weight 0.01): Affection is shown through repeated mentions and love for specific characters like Utsuho, and the game being considered a favorite work by reviewers.
- Annoyance (weight 0): Annoyance is specifically caused by the loud startup volume of the game, which can be jarring for players.
- Relaxation (weight 0): Relaxation is experienced as a post-challenge feeling, occurring after successfully overcoming difficult segments of the game.
- Love (weight 0): Love is expressed directly for the game and its characters, indicating a strong positive emotional connection.

- Awe (weight 0): Awe is inspired by Utsuho's impactful visuals, suggesting a sense of wonder and admiration for the character's presentation.
- Gratitude (weight 0): Gratitude is directed towards ZUN, the creator, for making the game, acknowledging the effort and artistry involved.}
