What players like:
- Accessible Difficulty for Newcomers (weight 0.84): Many players found the game's difficulty to be lower than previous Touhou titles, especially on Easy and Normal modes. This makes it an excellent entry point for new players while still offering a satisfying challenge for veterans on higher difficulties.
- Exceptional Music and Soundtrack (weight 0.73): The game's soundtrack received widespread praise, with many tracks being highlighted as memorable and among the best in the series. The music effectively sets the atmosphere and enhances the gameplay experience.
- Overpowered Otter Spirit (weight 0.4): The Otter spirit is frequently cited as overwhelmingly powerful, offering strong bombs, bullet-erasing barriers, and significant defensive capabilities. This spirit makes clearing stages and even Lunatic difficulty much more manageable.
- Engaging Story and Characters (weight 0.38): Players appreciated the game's darker atmosphere, memorable characters, and well-crafted, deeper story. The narrative is considered interesting and a highlight of the series.
- Impactful Roaring Mode Mechanic (weight 0.36): The 'Roaring Mode' system is a significant feature, providing powerful offensive and defensive boosts, including temporary invincibility and bullet clearing. This mechanic makes gameplay more exhilarating and helps players manage difficulty.
- High Replay Value (weight 0.25): The game offers significant replayability, with players motivated to try different characters and modes. This contributes to a highly enjoyable and satisfying experience over multiple playthroughs.
- Player-Friendly Systems (weight 0.24): The game is generally more forgiving and friendly towards players, with fluid controls and generous life and bomb acquisition. This makes the overall experience more accessible and enjoyable.
- Improved Character Art and Dedication (weight 0.23): ZUN's character art shows noticeable improvement in coloring, detail, and dynamic poses. The game also features a dedicated effort with 9 playable characters, each having unique endings and dialogues.
- Overpowered Youmu Character (weight 0.16): Youmu is highlighted as an exceptionally strong playable character, with a powerful shot and the ability to clear minor enemies instantly. This makes certain difficult stages much easier, especially with the Wolf spirit.
- Creative Bullet Patterns (weight 0.14): The bullet patterns, particularly from Stage 4 onwards, are noted for their creativity and beauty. They offer an interesting challenge and contribute to the fun of the gameplay.
- Enjoyable Later Stages and Extra Content (weight 0.14): The game's latter half, including Stages 4-6 and the Extra stage, is particularly appealing. These stages feature exciting boss battles and engaging content, with the Extra stage being surprisingly accessible.
- Rewarding Spirit Mechanic (weight 0.13): The beast spirit mechanic is well-received, providing rewarding offensive and defensive boosts. The spirits are designed to be player-friendly, slowing down for easier collection and always offering a benefit.

Common complaints:
- Poor Bullet Visibility & Eye Strain (weight 0.99): Many players report significant issues with bullet visibility due to clashing colors between bullets, backgrounds, and player effects. This often leads to eye strain and unexpected hits, especially during intense 'Roaring Mode' or with specific character/spirit combinations.
- Inconsistent Difficulty & Balance (weight 0.7): Feedback on difficulty is mixed, with some finding the game extremely hard due to bullet speed and specific mechanics, while others find it too easy, especially the extra stage. The 'Roaring Mode' can also feel overpowered, allowing players to bypass difficult sections.
- Intrusive Animal Spirit Gimmick (weight 0.65): The animal spirit collection system is widely criticized for being distracting and interfering with core bullet-dodging gameplay. Spirits often obscure visibility, are difficult to manage, and their constant presence on screen is seen as annoying and detrimental to the experience.
- Repetitive & Uninspired Danmaku (weight 0.56): Players find the bullet patterns and spell card designs to be monotonous, unoriginal, and lacking the creativity seen in previous titles. There's a sense of déjà vu, with many patterns feeling recycled or overly simplistic, reducing the joy of dodging.
- Technical & Quality of Life Issues (weight 0.15): Players report several technical issues, including frame drops in the pause menu, stuttering cursor movement, and the lack of a quick retry function. Gamepad adaptation is also noted as being extremely poor, affecting overall playability.
- Mediocre Soundtrack (weight 0.07): The game's soundtrack receives mixed reviews, with some tracks feeling out of place or not up to the usual series standard. It took some players a while to appreciate the music, indicating a lack of immediate appeal.

Gameplay feedback:
- Roaring Mode Activation & Effects (weight 0.57): Collecting five animal spirits activates 'Roaring Mode,' a temporary buff. If three or more of these spirits are of the same type, 'Berserk Roaring Mode' is triggered, offering enhanced effects. Successfully ending Roaring Mode without being hit grants bonus spirits or items, with specific bonuses for rare spirits.
- Core Animal Spirit Mechanic (weight 0.53): The game introduces a central 'Animal Spirit' system where players collect red, blue, and green spirits (Wolf, Otter, Eagle). This mechanic is compared to the UFO system from a previous game but is generally more forgiving. Players choose an initial spirit, and collecting spirits on screen influences gameplay.
- Variable Game Difficulty (weight 0.48): The game's difficulty is generally considered lower than other titles in the series, especially on Easy mode, which is noted as potentially the easiest ever. However, difficulty can vary significantly based on character choice, animal spirit selection, and player skill, with a noticeable gap between Easy and Normal modes.
- Playable Characters & Combinations (weight 0.34): The game features three playable characters: Reimu, Marisa, and Youmu. Each character can be paired with one of the three animal spirits (Wolf, Otter, Eagle), creating nine distinct playstyles. This system offers varied dialogue and gameplay experiences.
- Otter Spirit Focus (weight 0.31): The Otter spirit (Green) enhances bombs, increasing their duration and power, and provides an initial extra bomb. It also creates a barrier that can absorb or erase enemy bullets, making it a safer option for players who prefer to bomb through stages or seek an easier clear.
- Series Context & Features (weight 0.24): This game is the 17th main title in the Touhou Project series, known for its vertical-scrolling bullet hell gameplay. It adheres to series conventions like four difficulty levels, six main stages, and an extra stage, while also offering a 'flashy power trip' compared to other titles.
- Wolf Spirit Focus (weight 0.23): The Wolf spirit (Red) significantly enhances focused shots, providing high consistent damage per second. It is considered effective for quickly defeating bosses and navigating dense bullet patterns, making it a strong choice for players focused on damage output.
- Eagle Spirit Focus (weight 0.19): The Eagle spirit (Purple) boosts unfocused shots, making them wider and more powerful. This is particularly effective for clearing stages by covering a large area with projectiles, enhancing high-speed gameplay.
- Extra Stage Access (weight 0.09): Access to the extra stage is contingent on completing the main game without using continues. This encourages players to master the game for full content access.
- Bullet Pattern Design (weight 0.09): The game features visually appealing and complex bullet patterns, including curving, lingering, and homing projectiles. Successfully navigating these patterns often requires memorization.
- Hyper Mode Impact (weight 0.08): The 'Hyper Mode' (Roaring Mode) can feel overpowered, allowing players to significantly increase their damage output and potentially skip difficult boss spell cards. This can sometimes feel disjointed from the traditional spell card capture mechanic.

Performance notes:
- Display and Scaling Issues (weight 0.14): Players are experiencing various display problems, including frame rate drops in windowed mode, improper scaling with gaps at the bottom of the screen in fullscreen, and screen flickering upon launch. There are also reports of other applications' aspect ratios being affected when the game goes fullscreen.
