About the Game
==============
The latest instalment in the award-winning series, Sniper Elite 5 offers unparalleled sniping, tactical third-person combat and an enhanced kill cam. Fight your way across the most immersive maps yet, with many real-world locations captured in stunning detail, and an improved traversal system that lets you explore more of them than ever before.
France, 1944 – As part of a covert US Rangers operation to weaken the Atlantikwall fortifications along the coast of Brittany, elite marksman Karl Fairburne makes contact with the French Resistance. Soon they uncover a secret Nazi project that threatens to end the war before the Allies can even invade Europe: Operation Kraken.
**EXPANSIVE CAMPAIGN**
Many real-world locations have been captured using photogrammetry to recreate a living, immersive environment, and multiple infiltration and extraction points and kill list targets provide a whole new perspective on each mission. Take on the Nazi plot solo or work with a partner, with improved co-op mechanics allowing you to share ammo and items, give orders and heal each other.
**ADVANCED GUNPLAY PHYSICS AND TRAVERSAL**
Use ziplines, slide down slopes and shimmy along ledges to reach the perfect vantage point, or to sneak past a sharp-eyed lookout. Factor in rifle stock and barrel options along with gravity, wind and heart rate while you line up your sights on the target.
**HIGH CALIBRE CUSTOMISATION**
Use workbenches to customise and upgrade virtually every aspect of your weapon – change scopes, stocks, barrels, magazines and more. Rifles, secondaries and pistols all have a huge variety of options. On top of that you can select the ammo to suit your target, from armour-piercing right down to non-lethal.
**INVASION MODE – CAMPAIGN DROP IN PvP AND CO-OP**
Invade another player’s Campaign as an Axis sniper and engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse, providing a new dimension to the challenge as you stalk your prey. Alternatively, as Karl you can call for assistance and have a second sniper drop in to help you out of a tricky situation.
**TENSE ADVERSARIAL MULTIPLAYER**
Customise your character and loadout and earn XP, medals and ribbons as you take on intensely competitive 16 player battles that will really test your sharpshooting skills. If co-op’s more your style, you can team up with up to 3 other players against waves of enemies in Survival mode.
**ENHANCED KILL CAM**
More realistic and grisly than ever, the trademark X-ray kill cam returns, showing you the true destructive power of each shot. Bones deflect bullets unpredictably, ripping a new path through enemy bodies. SMGs and pistols can also trigger kill cams, including multiple shots in dramatic slow motion.

Below are summaries of things people say about the game per category.
Each point is assigned a weight that represents how often it is mentioned across all reviews.
What players like:
- Engaging and polished gameplay (weight 0.82): Players consistently praise the gameplay as fluid, fun, and engaging, with high replayability and smooth performance even on older hardware. The mechanics are well-polished, offering a satisfying experience across solo, co-op, and multiplayer modes.
- Great value for money, especially on sale (weight 0.67): Players highlight the game's excellent value, particularly when purchased on sale. With 50+ hours of content, deep mechanics, and replayability, it offers significant bang for the buck.
- Stunning graphics and immersive audio (weight 0.3): The game boasts high-quality visuals, detailed environments, and realistic sound design. Lighting, textures, and atmospheric effects create a rich, immersive WWII setting that enhances gameplay.
- Improved AI and dynamic challenges (weight 0.18): Enemies are smarter, with better flanking, reinforcements, and patrol behaviors. The alarm system and authentic difficulty modes provide a balanced but challenging experience, improving upon previous installments.
- Historically rich and detailed environments (weight 0.09): The game excels in creating detailed, historically accurate WWII environments. From character models to lighting, the attention to detail enhances immersion and authenticity.
- Engaging but predictable storyline (weight 0.09): While the story is well-constructed and immersive, some players find it average or predictable. However, it effectively supports the gameplay and setting without detracting from the experience.

Common complaints:
- Poor map design limits sniping (weight 0.76): Maps are criticized for being claustrophobic, linear, and lacking verticality or long-range sightlines. This forces players into close-quarters combat, undermining the sniper fantasy.
- Sniping downgraded in favor of stealth (weight 0.5): The game heavily prioritizes stealth and close-quarters combat over traditional sniping, contradicting its core identity. Players report using pistols/SMGs more than sniper rifles due to restrictive map design and mechanics.
- Unrealistic and inconsistent enemy AI (weight 0.43): Enemy AI exhibits immersion-breaking behaviors, such as telepathic detection, ignoring obvious threats, or reacting inconsistently to noise. This disrupts stealth and sniping gameplay.
- Repetitive and uninspired missions (weight 0.42): Missions lack variety, with repetitive objectives and excessive padding (e.g., backtracking, collectibles). Survival mode and DLC content are criticized for monotony and poor replayability.
- Bugs and technical issues persist (weight 0.33): Numerous bugs (e.g., clipping, AI glitches, inconsistent damage) remain unpatched, alongside performance issues like frame drops and crashes. Developers are accused of neglecting fixes.
- Inferior to previous Sniper Elite games (weight 0.31): The game is widely seen as a downgrade from *Sniper Elite 4*, with weaker sniping mechanics, graphics, and level design. Many features (e.g., grenade targeting, Mosin rifle) were removed or simplified.
- Weak story and narrative (weight 0.18): The storyline is forgettable, shallow, and poorly developed, with weak character arcs and unengaging dialogue. It fails to enhance the gameplay experience.
- Overpriced and low-quality DLC (weight 0.16): DLC content is criticized for being rushed, overpriced, and lacking meaningful additions. Many reviewers feel the monetization strategy is exploitative.
- Vehicle combat downgraded (weight 0.11): Anti-tank mechanics are less satisfying, with vehicles requiring excessive shots to destroy. Variety and interactivity with vehicles are reduced compared to previous titles.
- Clunky corpse and looting mechanics (weight 0.09): Interacting with corpses is frustrating (e.g., disappearing bodies, unclear loot status), and the system feels less intuitive than in prior games.
- Co-op instability and connectivity issues (weight 0.09): Multiplayer co-op suffers from frequent disconnections, misreported errors, and progress loss. Finding lobbies is difficult, and anti-cheat systems are unreliable.

Gameplay feedback:
- Stealth-focused sniper gameplay (weight 0.47): The game emphasizes stealth and tactical sniping, with mechanics inspired by franchises like *Hitman* and *Metal Gear Solid*. Players appreciate the patience-driven, open-ended mission design but note limitations in long-range sniping opportunities.
- Large, open-ended maps with replayability (weight 0.42): Maps are expansive, offering multiple paths, side objectives, and sandbox-style mission design. However, some players feel the content lacks depth or incentives for exploration.
- Multiple mission approaches (weight 0.3): Missions support stealth, loud assaults, or hybrid tactics, with optional objectives and branching paths. This flexibility is compared favorably to *Hitman*'s open-ended design.
- Realistic ballistics and sniping mechanics (weight 0.27): The game simulates bullet physics, wind, gravity, and heart-rate effects for immersive sniping. Players note the precision required for long-range shots, though terrain sometimes limits sightlines.
- Level design constraints (weight 0.27): While maps are large, some players criticize flat terrain, maze-like layouts, and forced close-quarters combat. Long-range sniping is often limited by environmental design.
- Innovative Axis Invasion mode (weight 0.23): A standout multiplayer feature where players invade others' campaigns in a PvP sniper hide-and-seek mechanic. While praised for its creativity, some report stability issues and cheating.
- Mixed AI behavior and detection (weight 0.23): Enemy AI varies from predictable patrols to dynamic flanking, with detection mechanics that reward stealth. Some players criticize inconsistencies, such as resetting detection when crouching.
- Co-op and survival modes (weight 0.2): Multiplayer includes cooperative campaigns, 4-player survival waves, and competitive modes. Survival mode is particularly praised for its improved mechanics and fun factor.
- Customizable difficulty settings (weight 0.13): The game offers difficulty modes like 'Authentic' for hardcore players, with adjustable checkpoints and AI challenge. Some players suggest balancing tweaks for higher difficulties.

Performance notes:
- Optimized for mid-low end PCs (weight 0.2): The game is frequently praised for running smoothly on older or mid-tier hardware, including subpar PCs, without stutters or frame drops. This suggests strong optimization for a broad range of systems.

- Anti-cheat (EAC) causes issues (weight 0.07): Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) is criticized for causing micro-stutters, lag, connection issues, and lobby errors. Players also report it fails to prevent hackers effectively.
- Co-op multiplayer disconnections (weight 0.05): Peer-to-peer multiplayer hosting suffers from frequent disconnections, error codes, and inconsistent performance, disrupting co-op gameplay.
- VRAM leakage and high usage (weight 0.05): VRAM usage increases progressively during gameplay, leading to potential performance issues. Some users report maxed-out VRAM on high-end GPUs (e.g., RTX 4070Ti Super).
- Game freezes and DRM issues (weight 0.05): Frequent freezes occur during gameplay, often linked to DRM or after cutscenes. Some users must force-close the game via Task Manager.
- Input and compatibility issues (weight 0.04): Problems include mouse input lag, DX12 compatibility issues, and audio defaulting to speakers even with headphones plugged in.
- Outdated graphics and settings (weight 0.04): Graphics are described as primitive or outdated, with minimal differences between antialiasing settings. Some textures fail to load even a year post-release.
- Limited upscaling options (weight 0.03): The game only supports FSR1, lacking modern upscaling alternatives like FSR2/3 or DLSS, which may limit performance on some systems.
- Steam Deck performance concerns (weight 0.02): Performance on Steam Deck varies, with reports of FPS instability and potential stability issues, though some users note smooth gameplay.

Recommendations:
- Ideal for tactical/stealth fans (weight 0.3): The game is highly recommended for players who enjoy methodical sniping, stealth mechanics, and tactical shooters, particularly fans of the Sniper Elite series or similar franchises like Hitman. Run-and-gun players are explicitly warned it may not suit their playstyle.
- DLCs worth buying on sale (weight 0.16): Players recommend purchasing DLCs (including the Season Pass) only when bundled with the base game during sales. Standalone DLC purchases at full price are discouraged due to monetization concerns.
- Skip if owning newer titles (weight 0.14): Veterans of the series or owners of *Sniper Elite 4* are advised to avoid this entry unless they are collectors or find it at a very low price. Many suggest starting with *SE4* or *SE3* instead for a better experience.
- Blind play enhances experience (weight 0.07): The game is praised for rewarding patience and strategy, with players suggesting a 100% blind playthrough for the most immersive experience. Adjusting to new mechanics and disabling assists (e.g., Empty Lung) is also recommended for depth.
- Desired content additions (weight 0.06): Players request more weapons (e.g., flamethrowers, Molotovs), vehicles, RNG elements for replayability, and mission statistics. Some suggest integrating *SE: Resistance* content into the base game.
- Multiplayer and innovation praised (weight 0.06): The game’s multiplayer modes and larger-scale levels are highlighted as standout improvements over previous entries. Some players suggest the series could benefit from a Cold War or modern setting for future innovation.
- Minor frustrations with mechanics (weight 0.04): Criticisms include scope flares, kill cameras slowing gameplay, and a lack of deterministic mission choices. Players suggest tweaks like turning off axis invasion or kill cameras for smoother play.
- Story and cutscenes skippable (weight 0.01): The narrative and cutscenes are deemed non-essential, with players advising others to focus on gameplay. Some even recommend ignoring them entirely.
- Dedicated servers needed (weight 0.01): A subset of players calls for Rebellion to implement dedicated servers to improve multiplayer stability and performance.

Other player notes:
- Large game installation size (weight 0.03): Multiple players noted the game occupies a significant portion of their hard drive, specifically around 10-15% of a 1TB drive. This may impact users with limited storage space.
- Concerns over series stagnation (weight 0.03): Feedback indicates the series may be reaching its 'milking point,' with players calling for a significant overhaul rather than incremental engine refinements.
- Desire for expanded gameplay features (weight 0.02): Players frequently mentioned wanting vehicles, mounted weapons, explosives, and open-world mechanics, suggesting a demand for more dynamic and varied gameplay.
- Demand for first-person mode (weight 0.02): Several players requested a first-person perspective in future installments, indicating a potential gap in the current gameplay experience.
- Nostalgia for past mechanics (weight 0.02): Players expressed fondness for mechanics and music from *Sniper Elite 4*, such as infinite stones, suggesting a desire for similar features in future releases.
- Criticism of realism trade-offs (weight 0.02): Players noted that authenticity and realism are being compromised for features like colorful camo and attachments (e.g., NVGs), which detracts from the core experience.
- Broad target audience appeal (weight 0.02): The game is enjoyed by a wide demographic, including teenagers, adults, and seniors, indicating strong cross-generational appeal.
- Collectibles as a gameplay focus (weight 0.02): Players highlighted the presence of 19 collectibles per mission, suggesting this is a notable aspect of the game’s design, though its impact on gameplay varies.
- Preference for immersive audio (weight 0.02): Some players chose to disable in-game music to enhance immersion, indicating a desire for more atmospheric or realistic sound design.
- Comparison to other franchises (weight 0.02): Some players compared the game to *Call of Duty*, criticizing elements like anime laser guns and Nicki Minaj skins as out of place for the series’ tone.

Emotions:
- Frustration (weight 0.3): Players experience significant frustration due to unfair AI behavior, including unrealistic enemy detection (e.g., tanks spotting distant gunfire while infantry ignore explosions) and braindead or repetitive AI patterns. Additionally, technical issues like unstable co-op connectivity, game-breaking bugs, and inconsistent mechanics (e.g., hit registration, clunky movement) exacerbate the problem. Progression barriers, such as late unlocks and artificial scarcity of resources (e.g., explosives, silencers), further contribute to repetitive and tedious gameplay.
- Disappointment (weight 0.21): The game fails to meet expectations as a sniping-focused experience, with players citing inferior mechanics, level design, and realism compared to predecessors. Key issues include a shift from open, sandbox-style maps to restrictive, linear designs, poor AI behavior (e.g., immersion-breaking moments like NPCs ignoring grenades), and a lack of innovation in storytelling or gameplay. Monetization practices, such as overpriced DLC and paywalled weapons, alongside persistent bugs and a perceived decline in quality, amplify the sense of letdown.
- Satisfaction (weight 0.15): Players derive satisfaction from the game’s refined sniping mechanics, including realistic ballistics, detailed X-ray kill cams, and tactical depth in mission execution. Improvements over previous entries, such as enhanced map design, engaging stealth mechanics, and active multiplayer modes (e.g., invasion mode), are frequently praised. The game’s value for money, graphical upgrades, and overall polish—when functioning correctly—also contribute to positive experiences, particularly for long-time fans of the franchise.
- Enjoyment (weight 0.08): Enjoyment stems from the game’s freedom in mission planning, large and detailed maps, and engaging stealth mechanics. Players appreciate the variety in gameplay approaches, such as long-range sniping or sabotage, and the replayability offered by co-op and multiplayer modes. The campaign’s story, ambiance, and tactical depth, along with the satisfaction of outmaneuvering enemies, create a consistently fun and immersive experience for many.
- Excitement (weight 0.07): The game excites players with its realistic sniping mechanics, thrilling multiplayer modes (e.g., Axis Invasions), and the adrenaline rush of mastering bullet physics. Unique features like the X-ray kill cam, dynamic AI behavior, and emergent gameplay moments (e.g., tense stealth sequences or unexpected objectives) heighten the sense of immersion. The open-world design and creative freedom in mission execution also contribute to the game’s appeal as a standout entry in the franchise.
- Amusement (weight 0.03): Players find amusement in the game’s over-the-top elements, such as the exaggerated X-ray kill cams (e.g., testicular destruction) and campy voice acting. Humorous moments arise from unrealistic enemy behavior (e.g., snipers dying to infantry or ignoring obvious threats) and the fictional, B-movie-style narrative. Multiplayer interactions, like unexpected deaths in invasion mode or playful co-op sessions, add to the lighthearted fun.
- Annoyance (weight 0.02): Annoyance arises from unreasonable design choices, such as restrictive movement mechanics (e.g., awkward ladder climbing, inconsistent edge detection), obnoxious alarm systems, and repetitive enemy reinforcements. Scarcity of resources (e.g., explosives, bag bombs) and underwhelming mechanics (e.g., self-bandaging, limited environmental kills) further frustrate players. Monetization practices, like product segmentation and season passes, are also criticized for encouraging piracy or feeling exploitative.
- Appreciation (weight 0.02): Players appreciate the game’s ballistic and tactical mechanics, which enhance the sniping experience, as well as the evolution of the franchise’s visuals and historical details. The addition of features like free play, gun customization, and well-crafted maps demonstrates the developers’ attention to detail. Fans of the series also express admiration for its legacy and the overall quality of the gameplay when it aligns with expectations.
- Anger (weight 0.01): Anger is directed at the game’s perceived rushed development and prioritization of profit over quality, evidenced by poor level design, forced combat scenarios, and persistent bugs. Monetization practices, such as locked content and overpriced DLC, alongside the inability to refund, fuel resentment. Some players feel the game represents a step backward from *Sniper Elite 4*, with core mechanics altered or removed for the worse, leading to frustration over wasted potential.
- Confusion (weight 0.01): Players experience confusion due to inconsistent and illogical AI behavior, such as enemies reacting unpredictably to threats (e.g., ignoring grenades but detecting footsteps). Unintuitive mechanics, like unclear looting systems or inconsistent vehicle weakpoint targeting, further disrupt immersion. Regression in features from previous entries (e.g., removed disguise mechanics) and technical inconsistencies (e.g., bullet damage variability) leave players questioning the game’s design choices.
- Boredom (weight 0.01): Boredom sets in due to the game’s repetitive mission structure, particularly after extended playtime, with side missions like assassinations or tower destruction feeling monotonous. Poor AI and a lack of engaging challenges or variety in targets diminish the sniping experience. Multiplayer modes can also become tedious when matched against overly skilled opponents, reducing the game’s long-term appeal.
- Hope (weight 0.01): Players express hope for future improvements in the series, anticipating that the next title will address current issues like AI behavior, level design, and monetization. Some suggest moving beyond the WWII setting to explore new narratives and mechanics, while others trust the developers to refine the sniping experience and restore the franchise’s reputation for innovation and quality.
- Nostalgia (weight 0.01): Nostalgia is evoked by comparisons to *Sniper Elite 4*, with players reminiscing about its music, mechanics, and open-world design. The series’ evolution, while appreciated, also highlights its stagnation in the WWII setting, as other franchises have moved on. Long-time fans reflect on the franchise’s journey, celebrating its progress while missing elements that defined earlier entries.
- Relief (weight 0.01): Relief is felt when technical issues, such as connectivity problems or crashes, are resolved, allowing players to enjoy the game as intended. Some express gratitude for acquiring the game through bundles, avoiding the disappointment of paying full price. Others find relief in discovering that feared mechanics, like respawn enemies or invasions, do not disrupt their experience as much as anticipated.
- Admiration (weight 0.01): Admiration is directed at the game’s graphics, art style, and optimization, with players praising the detailed environments, realistic X-ray kill cams, and moving story. The technical excellence and attention to visual fidelity, such as accurate modeling and lighting effects, elevate the game’s presentation and immersion, earning respect from fans and critics alike.
- Immersion (weight 0): The game immerses players through its authentic sound design, detailed wartime environments, and atmospheric tension. The feeling of being transported into a sniping-focused narrative is heightened by realistic mechanics, such as bullet physics and stealth gameplay, which encourage strategic thinking and engagement with the setting.
- Challenge (weight 0): Players appreciate the game’s increased difficulty, particularly in modes like Authentic difficulty, where smarter AI and realistic mechanics demand greater skill and strategy. The challenge of outmaneuvering enemies, managing resources, and adapting to dynamic scenarios adds depth and replayability for those seeking a tougher experience.
- Discomfort (weight 0): Discomfort arises from motion sickness caused by camera movement, particularly during intense action sequences or when using certain scopes. Repetitive and loud sound effects, such as German announcements or alarms, can also become grating over time, detracting from the immersive experience for some players.
- Pride (weight 0): Players feel pride in mastering the game’s authentic difficulty mode, improving their sharpshooting skills, and overcoming challenging scenarios. The satisfaction of executing precise shots, outsmarting enemies, and completing missions under pressure reinforces a sense of accomplishment and personal growth.
- Awe (weight 0): Awe is inspired by the game’s detailed environmental design, atmospheric tension, and high-quality modeling, textures, and lighting effects. Moments of cinematic sniping, such as long-range kills or dynamic multiplayer encounters, create a sense of spectacle that captivates players and enhances the game’s immersive qualities.}
